MEGHAN Markle and Prince Harry have made the bold step of unfollowing every single one of the Instagram accounts they had originally followed – and they’re not going to re-follow them.
All 23 founding accounts have gone, replaced with 16 new ones The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are following on Sussex Royal.
Among the original line-up which have been axed are Prince William and Kate Middleton’s account, @KensingtonRoyal, the official Royal Family account, as well as Princess Eugenie’s personal account.
The move is to mark Mental Health Awareness Month in the US, a subject which Princes Harry and William, as well as Kate, champion as part of their Heads Together campaign.
The 16 accounts are all people and organisations which work in the field of mental health, and the parents-to-be confirmed they’re not going to re-follow any old accounts.
Writing on Instagram, a post from the Sussex Royal account said: “Each month we will honour this same concept and change the accounts we solely follow based on a different theme or cause.
“Please go to our homepage and click 'following' to see each of the select accounts and find out more about their work.”
The announcement was made in a post alongside a collage of photos which come from the new accounts the Sussex’s are following, to promote mental wellbeing.
It said: “To pay tribute to all of the incredible work people across the globe are doing in this space, we are hoping to shine a light on several Instagram accounts that promote mental well-being, mental fitness, body positivity, self-care, and the importance of human connection – to not just hear each other, but to listen.
“There are countless organisations doing amazing work for mental health – please consider the accounts we’ve highlighted as a small snapshot of this global support network.”
The post has racked up more than 113,000 likes, with fans praising the couple for using the platform to shine spotlights on certain issues.
One person said: “Personally I think it is a good idea to promote the charities and causes they support.”
Another commented: “What an excellent way to use the follow option.
“Thank you for the work you do and looking forward to seeing each month's features.”
A third added: “Thanks for sharing . . . a creative way to spotlight the critical issue of mental health.
"The follow/unfollow idea is brilliant.”
