Best Garlic Presses 2019 | The Sun UK

SO many dishes call for garlic to add a unique hit of flavour.

With that in mind, is makes sense to pick the best garlic press for you to make things a breeze.

Because cloves of garlic are small, they can be very fiddly to chop with a knife, making the risk of cutting your fingers much higher.

Strictly speaking though, garlic presses don’t chop garlic…they crush it.

This can have its benefits too, as crushing it releases the garlic’s juice, which has a much stronger flavour than when it’s chopped.

As a result, you may need to use less garlic in a dish.

Most garlic presses have a chamber with holes in the bottom on the end of a handle, and a metal plate that is pushed into the chamber to crush the garlic through these holes.

However, there are some that use a twisting motion, like a pepper mill, to mince garlic – these are best for crushing lots of garlic cloves in one go.

Other presses comprise a curved piece of metal with holes and a handle at the top that is designed to be rocked over garlic cloves to crush them.

Most are made from stainless steel, aluminium or plastic and vary in size – look for one with a large chamber that can hold and crush several garlic cloves at once if you cook for several people or like to batch-cook in large quantities.

Some presses can crush unpeeled garlic, so look out for that feature if you don’t want to entertain the thought of even peeling the garlic, let alone chopping it by hand.

We’ve put together a roundup of the best garlic presses out there of varying designs and price points so you can choose the best one for you.

1. Vardefull Garlic Press

  • 365+ Vardefull Garlic Press in Black, £6, Ikea – buy here

We’ll start our roundup with a classic – and cheap – design, which is made of metal with plastic handles.

The chamber can hold several closes of garlic at once and can crush unpeeled garlic too.

It opens out flat for easy cleaning and is brilliant value.

2. Stoneline Garlic Press

  • Stoneline Garlic Press, £19.99, Wayfair – buy here

This all-stainless-steel press is as good-looking as it is functional.

It’ll crush two or three cloves in one go and they don’t even have to be peeled first.

As with all garlic presses, you can use it to crush fresh ginger, too.

3. Oxo Good Grips Garlic Crusher

  • Oxo Good Grips Garlic Crusher, £10.49, John Lewis – buy here

Made from sturdy, die-cast zinc with a large-capacity garlic chamber, you can blitz through several cloves of garlic with just one squeeze of the soft-grip handles.

It has a built-in cleaning device – simply flip the handles over and the red plastic teeth will push the excess garlic pulp through the crusher’s holes.

This little beauty can crush unpeeled as well as peeled garlic.

4. JML Garlic Cutter Dicer & Peeler

  • JML Garlic Cutter Dicer & Peeler (two-piece set), £14.99, Very – buy here

Unlike traditional garlic presses, this twisting design dices rather than crushes your garlic – perfect if you prefer a slightly milder flavour. Simply roll the garlic cloves in the silicone mat to remove the skins, then pop in the chamber and twist.

It’s dishwasher-safe too.

5. Joseph Joseph Helix Garlic Press

  • Joseph Joseph Helix Garlic Press in Green, £9.60, Amazon – buy here

This nifty crusher is a brilliant option for those who have little strength in their wrists or for whom pressing and twisting is difficult.

Just pop your garlic cloves in the chamber (it can hold several at once) and turn the top part of the press in a circular motion to crush the garlic, a bit like turning a corkscrew into a bottle of wine.

Pop in the dishwasher when you need to clean it.

6. GuDoQi Kitchen Garlic Rocker

  • GuDoQi Kitchen Garlic Rocker, £7.99, Amazon – buy here

The easiest to clean out of all the presses we’ve found because there are no separate moving parts, this stainless-steel-and-plastic rocker design is super easy and quick to use.

When you’re done crushing, simply scrape the garlic off the steel surface and into your pan.
