‘Chubby girl’ clothing hack which encourages women to wrap their stomachs in cling film for a smoother silhouette is slammed as ‘insulting’ online

  • Tip recommends women wrap stomachs in cling film for smoother silhouettes
  • Followers branded it ‘insulting’ and argued it should celebrate different shapes

A Facebook page which provides DIY clothing and cleaning advice has been slammed for its latest tip, described as a ‘must-know chubby girl clothing hack’.

International page 5 Minute Crafts – who appear to be based in Cyprus- has come under fire for recommending women wrap their stomachs in layers of clingfilm to create a smoother silhouette, with followers branding it ‘insulting’.

Many followers argued that the video shouldn’t be promoting one-dimensional beauty standards, while others questioned the effectiveness and safety of using cling film as a bodyshaper.

One woman wrote: ‘This video really irritates me. Not everyone is proportioned the same way, nor should we be. Individuality is what makes everyone beautiful. Ugh. Officially unfollowing this page. So aggravating.’

The video shows a woman posing in a dress, before grabbing at her midriff with an unhappy expression.

She then strips down to her underwear, and begins wrapping her stomach in multiple layers of clingfilm.

Putting the dress back on, the video clip cuts to a side-on before and after comparison of her silhouette before she’s applied the corset-like cling film.

The post – shared this week- quickly went viral, racking up 38,000 likes, 11,000 shares and over 2,000 comments.

Many followers argued that the video shouldn’t be promoting unrealistic one-dimensional beauty standards, while others questioned the effectiveness and safety of using cling film as a bodyshaper

One follower wrote: ‘Great ideas. But is this really necessary?Just be proud of yourself. Beauty, figure, looking perfect is not everything.’

Another added: ‘Five hacks for curvy girls’ that all include ways to alter your appearance towards society’s beauty standards. Wow. This is bad.’

Agreeing, one wrote: ‘Or you can promote to girls/women to love their body!’ This is just insulting

And questioning the video, another said: ‘So anyone over a size 12 is ‘plus size’? I think not.’

Challenging the tip, another said: ‘Cling wrap idea- not so good. You can ‘suffocate’ your body. It’ll become moist from sweat and can possibly get blisters.’

But others took it more lightheartedly, with one follower joking: ‘Oh yeah? And what happens when I get lucky later that night and we both have to spend twenty mins getting the godforsaken clingwrap off my belly? Foreplay ruined.’
