Subtle yet shiny makeup has been all the rage this year: think syrup nails or TikTok’s crying makeup trend.
But now, TikTokers are going wild for mermaid eyes – the latest shimmery makeup look inspired by none other than Mrs Hailey Bieber.
Mermaid eyes are a sparkly, iridescent and wet-look eyeshadow style, perfect for a day-to-night moment or even a subtly sexy evening look.
And the good news is the trend is really simple to recreate.
All you need is some eyeliner, a base eyeshadow colour that’s close to your skin tone, and a shimmery shadow to go over the top.
Zoe Trigwell, award-winning MUA and founder of Trigwell Cosmetics, has shared the perfect mermaid eyes tutorial to bring this summer’s trend with us as we head into autumn.
How to achieve TikTok’s mermaid eyes makeup look
how stunning are these pigments #mermaideyes #mermaidmakeup
Step 1: Prep and prime
‘As with any make-up look, a base and prime will help with a smooth application and also extend the longevity of the look,’ says Zoe.
‘Use a concealer to create an even skin tone across the eyelid – this is the equivalent of painting on a blank canvas.’
Step 2: Soft eyeliner line
Once you have applied a sticky primer and concealer, it’s time for some eyelines.
‘I would start with creating a very soft eyeliner wing with a brown eyeliner pen, which offers better precision than an eyeshadow line,’ says Zoe.
‘I would always use a waterproof liner as this will protect against the elements.
‘As we move through the end of summer and into autumn, you can make the look feel more seasonal with a darker liner.’
Step 3: Create a base colour

‘With any eye look, coat your eyelid with a matte neutral eyeshadow,’ says Zoe. ‘Try and match this as closely as possible with your desired glitter or iridescent shadow.’
Step 4: Choose a glitter/iridescent eyeshadow to match
This step is where the look starts to come alive. Choose either a loose glitter or iridescent wet eyeshadow to create the main look.
‘You want to cover the full lid and then blend this to the eyebrow,’ says Zoe.
‘For a more bold look opt for a blue or turquoise and bring this under the eye.
‘For something more autumnal, go for a deeper bronze and gold, but the overall vibe should be a wet-look eye.’
Step 5: Touch up with shimmer
Can you ever have too much shimmer? We don’t think so.
‘Give your eyes a final coat of your glitter product and then finish with a soft mascara,’ says Zoe.
‘If you feel you want a more defined lash line, add a wet eyeliner to finish the look.’
Et voila! Now this is how you get runway ready eyes in under 10 minutes.
