Ab day workouts can be intense and daunting at the best of times, but what if you had to do your knee raises while hanging from the outside of a plane in mid-flight?
That’s exactly what Sergey Boytsov did on a recent skydive; in a video which he posted to Instagram in July, the Russian bodybuilder and physique model demonstrated his hanging leg raise technique while holding onto the side of a plane, before dropping into his dive. Given that skydives usually take place at an altitude of 14,000 feet, it’s safe to say Boytsov has got a decent grip.
You don’t have to be dangling from the side of an aircraft at high altitude to reap the benefits of the hanging leg lift. But if you are looking to up the difficulty of the move, then there are a number of variations which you can try. Firstly, the hanging oblique knee raise—a go-to move for the likes of Ryan Reynolds and Sebastian Stan—improves grip strength as well as targeting the sides of the abs rather than the front.
Alternatively, the typewriter single-leg lift adds time-under-tension and forces your core to twist and turn. “You’re challenging your abs to work extra-hard,” says Men’s Health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel C.S.C.S. “And you’re also not completely eliminating involvement from that other leg. The straighter you keep your non-working leg, the more it becomes a weighted lever that adds challenge to the other leg’s work.”
