Chrissy Teigen revealed last night that she and her husband, John Legend, lost their baby boy just weeks after announcing they were expecting their third child together.
Teigen shared the solemn announcement on Instagram late Wednesday with a heartbreaking message detailing her and Legend’s grief. Alongside the note to fans and the public, Teigen shared a series of photos of herself distraught in the hospital room with Legend by her side.
“We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough,” Teigen began her message.
“We never decide on our babies’ names until the last possible moment after they’re born, just before we leave the hospital. But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack. So he will always be Jack to us. Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever.”
The model and Cravings author has been open and honest about complications with her third pregnancy; just recently, she shared that she was hospitalized for excessive bleeding. She and Legend announced the news of their third child back in August through Legend’s music video for his song “Wild.” Teigen shared that this time, she got pregnant naturally rather than through IVF as she did with their first two children.
“To our Jack – I’m so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn’t give you the home you needed to survive. We will always love you,” Teigen continued in her post.
“Thank you to everyone who has been sending us positive energy, thoughts and prayers. We feel all of your love and truly appreciate you.”
Teigen finished her note by mentioning her and Legend’s two other children, Luna Stephens, 4, and Miles Stephens, 2, and her hope that they as a family will be able to eventually overcome such a massive loss.
“We are so grateful for the life we have, for our wonderful babies Luna and Miles, for all the amazing things we’ve been able to experience,” said Teigen. “But everyday can’t be full of sunshine. On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it.”
Teigen also posted a tweet late last night expressing the pain she was experiencing while on her way back home from the hospital. “Driving home from the hospital with no baby. How can this be real,” she wrote.
Legend added in a tweet, “We love you, Jack.”
