Declan Donnelly makes awkward gaffe in front of Kate Middleton

Declan Donnelly made a hilarious blunder while introducing the Duchess of Cambridge at Forward Trust's "Taking Action on Addiction" campaign event.

The 46 year old, who recently shared his excitement over the I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! cast, was left red-faced on Tuesday 19 October when he accidentally called Kate Middleton, 39, Her Majesty – which is a title reserved for the Queen.

"Shortly we'll be hearing from Her Majesty," he said while standing up at the podium alongside Ant McPartlin, 45, before stumbling his words.

Attempting to correct his mistake, he continued: "Erm, from Her Royal Highness rather…" as Ant, also 45, laughed.

Declan then looked straight at Kate and said: "I've just promoted you there, rather prematurely."

In a bid to rescue his pal, Ant then said: "That must happen all the time," as Declan continued: "It doesn't happen to me. We'll be hearing from Her Royal Highness, rather, very shortly.

"Then we'll watch a very powerful short film that challenges the perception of addictions."

Kate made an eloquent speech about how nobody is an addict by “choice” or “immune” to it.

She said: "Addiction is not a choice. No-one chooses to become an addict. But it can happen to any one of us. None of us are immune."

Later, Ant spoke to the Duchess on his own two-year battle with addiction to subscription painkillers and alcohol after he had a knee operation in 2015.

The star had a car crash in 2018 and was found to have double the legal alcohol limit within his system. Following the accident, Ant checked himself into rehab and has since opened up about his struggles with addiction.

Speaking to the Duchess, Dec said the first step is “actually taking action.”

He explained: “A lot of people don’t know where to turn or what to do… they’re a bit lost. That's why awareness is so important."

The important thing, Ant echoed, was “just asking for help”.

Ant went into more depth about how bad his addiction had been. He added: “I found that myself, by the time I asked for help it was really bad.

“But as soon as you opened up to people the problem starts to disappear and it gets better.”

Kate added one of the most important things with addiction is figuring out “how can we get in there before we get to crisis point” to give support to people earlier on.
