Denise Van Outen’s daughter, 11, repeats school year after lockdown damaged her learning

Denise Van Outen has revealed she held her 11 year old daughter Betsy back a year in school so she could catch up after lockdown affected her learning.

Betsy, who has dyslexia and dyspraxia, is due to start secondary school in September.

Former Celebrity Gogglebox star Denise exclusively told OK! about the decision after Betsy, who she shares with ex-husband and actor Lee Mead, struggled with homeschooling during the pandemic.

She told us of Betsy going to high school: “She’s ready now but she wasn’t before. I held her back for a year because of the whole lockdown situation.

“Her and a couple of the other kids couldn’t do the online learning because they couldn’t have the intervention as she’d have extra help in class.

“She was confused as to what work she was doing. She missed out on a lot of schooling and I spoke to her about it and we both agreed it was best for her to sit back.

“It’s helped her catch up and luckily her school was understanding, as it’s a difficult thing to manage.”

Denise has successfully co-parented with former Casualty star Lee ever since their divorce in 2013 and she says it’s something they’re “both proud of as parents”.

“It’s really nice and really good for Betsy,” she says. “Because we’re in the same industry, he knows if I’m busy so he will have her, and vice versa. We work it between us.”

The year after their divorce finalised, Denise went on to meet her former fiancé Eddie Boxshall.

The pair were set up on a blind date at a private members’ club in central London and instantly hit it off.

They were due to marry next year, but things all came crashing down last November when Denise discovered pictures and messages from other women on commodities trader Eddie’s iPad.

Denise confirmed their split in January and went on to discuss their break-up two months later.

"The one thing I’m really proud of myself for is I do know when to walk away and I don’t like to be taken advantage of,” she said.

She continued: "Sometimes it’s been to the detriment of my own career or in my own relationships, but I just feel like it’s really important as a woman to have self-worth and self-respect.

"I’ve always tried to maintain that in anything that I do in life, generally. More so now as a mother because I feel like I’m a role model and I’ve got to set an example."
