Actress and fitness influencer Gemma Atkinson, 36, has revealed that she was holding on to a bag of dog poo as her Strictly partner Gorka Marquez, 30, got down on one knee earlier this year. Appearing on Steph’s Packed Lunch, the star candidly retold the romantic moment, including the behind-the-scenes goings on which she said they now look back at and laugh.
I was holding a poo bag when he asked me
Speaking to the former BBC presenter, Gemma – who shares daughter Mia, two, with her fiancé – retold the story of how her beau proposed, including one surprising detail.
She said: “We went for a really lovely dog walk at a place we always go. It’s beautiful: a big lake, a big old house.”
The former Hollyoaks actress said that she thought her beau’s behaviour was unusual as she hadn’t yet received a card and Gorka bought along his photography equipment.
“We went there on Valentine’s Day and Gorka wanted to take his drone.
“I thought, ‘Here we go,’ because he loves photography,” she explained.
“He hadn’t given me a card, which I thought was a little odd because we normally give each other a card – no gifts, just a card.”
However, the star revealed that while on the walk Gorka finally gave her a card, but it was wrongly addressed.
Gemma continued: “He finally said, ‘I have my card for you,’ and when I opened it, it said ‘To my fiancée’ so that was a bit odd.”
The radio presenter revealed that her Spanish beau had set up a romantic proposal including their two dogs and was using his equipment to record the whole thing.
“I turned around and he was on one knee with Norman and Ollie either side of him and he’d set his drone up, behind us, and it captured everything,” she gushed.
Nevertheless, ever the responsible dog owner, the mother-of-one explained that during the proposal she was still holding onto a bag of dog poo from during their walk.
Gemma said: “It’s beautiful. The only thing with it that we look back and laugh at is I was holding a poo bag when he asked me.

“I just popped it down on a bench and put my hands to my face, and I said, ‘Ugh, I put my hands to my face and I was holding a poo bag'”, she added.
Following the romantic engagement on Valentine’s day, Gemma posted a sweet snap on social media of her, Gorka and her huge engagement ring.
She captioned the picture: “Valentine’s forever… Of course I said yes.”
Following the engagement, Gemma told Steph on her self-titled lunch show about her and Gorka’s wedding plans.
Revealing that the coronavirus pandemic has complicated plans, Gemma added that her and her fiancé have agreed to tie the knot abroad.
She said: “We’re not going to do it, obviously, this year cause of everything that has gone on, the only thing we have agreed on so far is that we’re gonna do it abroad.
“Gorka wants his family to be able to order drinks at the bar and understand the waiters.
Gemma continued: “They [Gorka’s family] don’t speak English and my lot don’t speak Spanish, so we’ve said we’ll meet halfway.
“So that’s all we’ve agreed on, it’s gonna be abroad. And hopefully not this year, but the year after – if I can tolerate him that long obviously,” she added.
