Holly Willoughby had ‘no confidence’ as a child and feared she’d ‘say something stupid’

Holly Willoughby has revealed how she used to "hide behind her fringe" as a child as she lacked confidence and believed she would "never" be successful.

The 41 year old, whose fans recently compared her Freeze the Fear with Wim Hof outfit to Willy Wonka, explained that she used to mumble into her sleeve out of fear she would "say something stupid" in a candid interview with the Daily Mail.

"I'm probably the one most surprised by the position I'm now in," she shared, referencing her position as a presenter for ITV's This Morning among many others.

The star went on: "I never thought I'd be successful. At school I didn't speak. Being dyslexic puts you at the bottom of the class.

"I had no confidence. I hid behind my fringe and if anyone other than my friends spoke to me, I'd mumble into my sleeve, worrying that anything I said would be stupid."

Now, having been in the industry for countless years, she's one of the most well-known names in television – but this hasn't stopped her from occasionally making mistakes live on air.

Recalling a 2009 interview with Gordon Brown, she shared how "dreadful" she was, but said how determined she was at trying to prove herself.

"I was dreadful," she said. "The worst thing was that so many people in the industry had said I couldn't do that job. I wanted to prove myself.

"I sat with the producers, discussing it for ages. Then when it came to the interview I was trying to read out questions from the script.

"I was saying words I didn't even understand, mangling up sentences and completely floundering. I was awful."
