Queen of pop Madonna has royally annoyed her fans after banning the use of mobile phones during her concerts.
The Material Girl issued the decree forbidding ticket holders attending her new Madame X tour threatening them with confiscation by stadium staff if anyone is found flouting the rule.
On entry into the venue, phones are placed in lockable ‘Yondr’ cases which can only be opened in designated areas.
The mobiles stay in the possession of the owners at all times.
Now fans fear the singer will enforce the same strict rules during her 15-day residency at the London Palladium in February
Madonna, 61, is not the first to impose a ban after promoters cited a decrease in demand for tour DVDs and other merchandise as fan footage became so prevalent on social media sites such a YouTube.
Already concert-goers in America have voiced their anger about the move as the tour got underway on Tuesday night in New York.
Willy Milan tweeted: “That’s rich and hypocritical for Madonna fandom to come for people using cell phones in concerts considering we constantly watch, enjoy, tweet and share countless live footage shared from people that recorded her shows in previous tours.”
Donny Brook added: “No cell phones, eh? Why not? Why do you care? You’ve already sold the ticket. Who cares if they even show up as long as there are ticket sales, right? Its all about the money, money, money.”
Others pointed to the safety aspect surrounding the ban.
One tweeted: “Given the unfortunate tragedy at the Ariana Grande concert, there is a valid reason for people to need to keep their phones on them. I don’t agree with the Madonna cell phone policy
Ticket buyers were informed of the ban in an email.
It read: “Use of cellphones, smart watches, smart accessories, cameras or recording devices will not be permitted in the performance space.”
However, not all Madonna fans were against the decision.
One said: “Thank God. I hate phones and cameras blocking my view,” another tweeted: “All the f****** whinging on about the no phone rule at Madame X.
Its normal policy for theatres plus I’ve had previous M concerts ruined by people holding phones up. I’m super happy it’s a phone-free zone.”
Many artists have previously installed a ban on mobile phones at their performances, including Alicia Keyes and Jack White.
Beyonce and Adele have also hit out at their use.
The Hello singer scolded one woman while singing in Italy saying: “Can you stop filming me with a video camera because I'm really here in real life?
"You can enjoy it in real life, rather than through your camera."
