Rami Malek Reportedly Fell Off Stage After His Best Actor Win At The Oscars

The 2019 Oscar Awards ceremony wasn’t all smooth sailing for Rami Malek.

After he received the Best Actor honor for his role as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, Malek reportedly tumbled off stage — clutching his statuette tight, of course.

The Mr. Robot star fell into the audience area where he was moved to the front row and eventually transported backstage, where he was treated by paramedics. His condition is currently unknown, although the fall didn’t appear serious.

Just minutes before, Malek offered a heartfelt acceptance speech.

“Oh, my gosh,” he started. “My mom is in here somewhere. Oh, oh, I love you, lady. My dad didn’t get to see any of this, but I think he’s looking down on me right now.”

Malek went on to thank the film’s leadership and the studio for giving him a shot.

“I may not have been the obvious choice, but I guess it worked out,” he said.

After sharing how shocked the childhood version of himself would have been to find out he was an Oscar-winner, he dug deeper.

“That kid was struggling with his identity, trying to figure himself out,” he said, “and I think to anyone struggling with theirs, and trying to discover their voice: Listen, we made a film about a gay man, an immigrant, who lived his life just unapologetically himself. And the fact that I’m celebrating him and this story with you tonight is proof that we’re longing for stories like this.”

“I am the son of immigrants from Egypt,” Malek said. “I’m a first-generation American. And a lot of my story is being written right now, and I could not be more grateful to each and every one of you, and everyone who believed in me. This moment is something I will treasure for the rest of my life.”

The 91st Academy Awards took place Sunday, February 24 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. For the first time since 1989, there was no host. Instead, Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler opened the show and stars took turns presenting awards.
