Veteran broadcaster Melvyn Bragg has opened up about having a tough time with his health. The star, who is set to bring his The South Bank Sky Awards back, has shared how he’s been fighting “a couple of cancers” in his time away from television.

Melvyn opened up about his health issues in response to a question about “looking tired” back in 2020.

The 81-year-old explained: “Well, I didn’t go on about it and I’m not going to go on about it now.

“I had a rotten time for two or three years. I had a couple of cancers, I had a collapsed lung, I had all sorts of things.

“It just seemed to be one thing after another. But that’s because it was one thing after another!”

The presenter who will be turning 82 later this year, revealed how his health was improving.

He added to the Radio Times: “But I seem to have got through.

“I try to walk every day, and that’s building up.

“My wife tells me what to do. You get through these things if you’re lucky.”

The BBC Radio 4 host has previously opened up about his health in interviews.

Speaking back in 2019, the broadcaster revealed some of the illnesses he had suffered.

He told The Cumberland News: “I’ve had 15 months of horrible bad health.

“And I’m not quite clear of cancer yet. But I’m well on the way. But that depletes you.

“I had viral pneumonia, a collapsed lung, a new hip. The cancer was very nasty.”

The presenter then added: “They had to wait to operate: the pneumonia depleted me a lot.

“Then I went in for very heavy treatment, and came through it.

“Just last week we went for another big check-up and I’m doing very well. Nearly through it.”

However, aside from his health issues, Melvyn will soon be back at a glitzy awards ceremony.

He created The South Bank Awards, which will be returning on July 18.

He’ll also be back presenting the latest star-studded ceremony in person this year.

The nominations for this year include artists like Dua Lipa and series like I May Destroy You and Industry.
