Sarah Hyland taking social media break after cousin’s death

Sarah Hyland is taking herself off Twitter in the wake of her 14-year-old cousin’s death.

After Trevor Canaday was killed by a drunk driver over the weekend, Hyland and her “Modern Family” co-stars shared a GoFundMe page in hopes of helping her family raise money for his funeral and his father’s hospital costs. Hyland, who has health issues of her own, received backlash from internet trolls who claimed she could afford to pay for everything herself.

“Maybe millionaires shouldn’t be asking for money they have in their wallet. Her clothes alone cost more then my salary,” tweeted one user.

“Ridiculous to ask us to fund this. Good bye Sarah Hyland delete,” wrote another.

In response, Hyland is going offline.

“You guys finally did it. Your horrible negative ignorant words have broken me. Happy? Staying offline for a while,” she wrote. “I have a special announcement and video releasing on Wednesday I believe. So. There’s that. ✌?”

The drunk driver, named Jeffrey Eggeling, ran a red light and crashed into Canaday’s vehicle, which caused Hyland’s cousin to be ejected from the car, according to a press release from the Omaha Police Department.

Eggeling was booked for two counts of DUI causing serious bodily injury and leaving the scene of a personal injury crash.
