Simon McCoy, 59, revealed he was joining GB News after he announced his exit from BBC News in March. The broadcaster joked that he was “frustrated” with the current affairs news channel – which is set to launch this year – for missing out on the coverage of Princess Beatrice’s baby news.
It comes after Buckingham Palace announced that Princess Beatrice is pregnant and expecting her first child with husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in the autumn.
The couple married in July last year at a secret ceremony attended by the Queen at All Saints Chapel, Windsor Great Park.
Simon took to Twitter and quipped he was “frustrated” at not being able to tell viewers the news.
In view of his 63,000 followers, the former BBC correspondent penned: “How frustrating.
“A Royal baby announcement. And we’re not on air yet. #GBNews.”
The cheeky post caught the attention of his followers, as one social media user pulled up an old clip of Simon sharing his reaction to the news that Prince William and Kate Middleton were expecting their third child in 2018.
The Twitter user captioned the post: “You’ve never been a fan of a royal baby announcement.”
In the BBC news clip, Simon began: “Err…just got this in from Kensington Palace.
“Their Royal Highnesses’ the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm that they are expecting a baby in April.”
He continued: “Bearing in mind they announced that she was pregnant back in September.
“Umm… it was thought that she was around two or three months pregnant.”
Simon concluded: “But anyway, it’s April. So clear your diaries, get the time booked off because that’s what I’m doing.”

The former broadcaster later shut down claims that he will be covering royal news on the current affairs channel.
“Simon McCoy. GB News Royal Correspondent. Whether he likes it or not,” a social media user remarked.
To which Simon replied: “Not.”
Other social media users quizzed the broadcaster on when GB News would officially launch.
One queried: “So when is GB news going on air?” while another probed: “When will you start to show GB news Simon? Any idea please?”
GB News will be on Freeview channel 236 later this year and already has a presence with the network.
A graphic on the channel reads: “GB News is coming” but no official date has been announced.
Andrew Neil, the channel’s chairman, has said that it “will not be shouty, angry television” and insisted it will conform to Ofcom rules on impartiality.
On their site, it says: “GB News will deliver news, opinion & debate for all of the United Kingdom. on Freeview, Sky, Virgin Media, YouView, Freesat, mobile, online and audio.”
