Dave Teal, 52, found the audio among tapes from the 1960s and 70s he inherited from a friend three years ago.

The IT project leader couldn’t believe his luck when he came across Sir Terry introducing festive songs on the BBC Light Programme on Christmas Eve in 1966.

The broadcaster had only started DJing for the corporation three months prior to the show.

Dave, from Leeds, said: “I researched it and found it was from 1966 – before I was born! To find out it was his 12th show for the BBC ever and now the earliest surviving Wogan BBC show made it even more amazing.

“I only remember Sir Terry from the 1980s onwards, with Blankety Blank, his chat show, Eurovision, Children in Need and his breakfast show, so to hear this was just incredible.”

Sir Terry plays a variety of festive songs during the hour-long show, kicking off with Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, by the McGuire Sisters.
