Can You Spot the Hidden Messages? 13 Times Celeb Outfits Had Secret Meanings

Baldwin recently stepped out sporting a seatbelt accessory around her waist, but the style choice was about much more than being trendy.

The belt was made by Krost, a brand that partnered with March for Our Lives, the organization started by survivors of the February 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Ten percent of proceeds from Krost’s Support Your Friends collection are donated to the activist group.

A close look at Baldwin’s belt reveals the words “For Support” printed repeatedly.

Hadid has also shown her support for the anti-gun violence nonprofit Krost pieces. She wore a cropped T-shirt that read “Support Your Friends” while in Milan for fashion week earlier this month.

Gomez is all about hiding messages in her Met Gala looks. In 2017, she carried a Coach bag that discreetly said “Love yourself first” on the bottom. The singer has the same phrase tattooed on her back in Arabic script.

Gomez took things even further in 2018, displaying her favorite quote from scripture on her purse and on a ribbon that was sewn into her gown. “A woman who fears the lord is a woman who shall be praised,” the quote read.

A lot of thought usually goes into red carpet beauty looks, but makeup artist Rachel Goodwin put extra-special consideration into Stone’s appearance at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards.

Ahead of the ceremony, women in the entertainment industry had agreed to wear black to support the Time’s Up movement, and Goodwin wanted to connect to the movement in another way, too.

“Once I heard about the idea of women coming together and wearing black to the ceremony, and the message behind it, my friend Arianne [Phillips] designing the Time’s Up pin and what the message is, I wanted the makeup to have a message as well,” Goodwin told PEOPLE about planning Stone’s look. “I thought, red lipstick was a color suffragettes wore, so I did more research and found that they also wore very specific, symbolic sashes, pins, petticoats and all these things in purple, emerald green and white when they were fighting for the right to vote.”

The artist incorporated all three meaningful colors on Stone, using emerald green and white on her eyelids and violet on her lips. “I wanted to give the beauty look that had more meaning to me that was far beyond mascara and lipstick,” Goodwin added.

Ronan wore a custom beaded Gucci gown to the 2019 Golden Globes. Surprisingly, the metallic dress was actually all about optimism.

“Last year was such a tumultuous year for so many things. There was a lot of negativity, and I kept trying to find the positive,” stylist Elizabeth Saltzman, who worked with Gucci to create the dress, told The Hollywood Reporter. “I just said, ‘I’d like a silver lining.’ It’s so embarrassing, but I feel like I really want to be able to say something.”

Rae scored hosting duties at the 2018 CFDA Awards. She arrived on the red carpet in a blue Pyer Moss gown made of more than 180,000 Swarovski crystals, but it was the accessory around her waist that grabbed the most attention.

“Every N—- Is a Star,” was inscribed on the belt. The phrase is the title of a Boris Gardiner song that was used during a Pyer Moss runway show in 2018. The track also appeared in Moonlight and was sampled in Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly Song, “Wesley’s Theory.”

“It was a last minute idea that tied in the messages of our last show as well as Issa’s artistry,” designer Kerby Jean-Raymond told Refinery29 of the belt.

Lively’s husband and two kids couldn’t be with her at the 2018 Met Gala, but she found a way to keep them close at the glam event nonetheless. The clutch she carried to accessorize her extravagant Versace gown was bedazzled with B, R, J, I, the initials of her and her husband and daughters James and Inez, along with Reynolds, their surname.

The Melodrama singer not-so-subtlety displayed her feminist values with a poem sewn into the back of her Valentino gown at the 2018 Grammys.

The excerpt came from Jenny Holzer’s Inflammatory Essays, and read, in part, “The reckoning will be hastened by the staging of seed disturbances. The apocalypse will blossom.”

The statement came after the Grammys’ controversial decision not to offer Lorde a solo performance, despite giving other best album nominees  — who were all male — the opportunity.

Haddish’s dramatic 2018 Oscars gown had a touching backstory. On the red carpet, she told ABC it was a tribute to her father, who was from Eritrea in northeast Africa and had passed away there the year prior.

“He said one day I would end up here, and if I ever ended up at the Oscars to honor my people, so I’m honoring my fellow Eritreans,” she said.

Stranger Things fans believed Brown gave a nod to her character, Eleven, with the hairstyle she rocked at the 2018 Golden Globes.

According to eagle-eyed fans of the show, the three braids on the back of her head formed two parallel lines, or the number 11. Hair stylist Blake Erik told Refinery29 that the homage was just a “cheeky coincidence,” but we like to think he and Brown subconsciously wanted to give a shout-out to the telekinetic youngster.

In 2017, Seyfried arrived at the premiere of Twin Peaks in a black dress with the word “equality” embroidered on the hem.

The message came following the actress’ past statements on gender pay disparity.

“A few years ago, on one of my big-budget films, I found I was being paid 10 percent of what my male costar was getting, and we were pretty even in status,” Seyfried told the Sunday Times in 2015. “I think people think that just because I’m easy-going and game to do things, I’ll just take as little as they offer … It’s not about how much you get, it’s about how fair it is.”

The Handmaid’s Tale actress sent a very important message to the patriarchy with the shoes she wore to the Emmys in 2017.

Stylist Karla Welch shared a close-up of the bottom of one of the satin pumps on Instagram, revealing that the word “off” was written on the sole. “You’ll have to guess what the other shoe says … our note to the patriarchy #teamresistance,” she captioned the picture.
