Alton Towers thrill-seekers can bag one of the 2,000 job vacancies this summer

Alton Towers has launched a recruitment drive for 2,000 positions ahead of the 2019 season, including rides assistants, actors and security.

The crew, dubbed the Scream Team, will also work on the new Alton Towers Dungeon and Stargazing Pods. While many of the jobs are temporary, there is the chance to land full-time work and even progress into management.

Other jobs on offer include animal information hosts, cashiers, customer service, cleaners, chefs and warehouse roles. All the posts are perfect for thrill-seekers as perks include a free Merlin Pass to other top UK attractions.

Gaz Morris joined Alton Towers in 1999 as a site host for a fireworks event, just a few days after leaving school. The 35-year-old has climbed the firm’s career ladder and is now head of the Rides Department for the entire attraction.

Hip work booming

THE hipsters trend has sparked a mini jobs boom – with a four-fold increase in roles in the last four years.

The biggest rises are for coffee baristas, tattoo artists, yoga teachers and bartenders, according to jobs site Indeed.

Bill Richards, its UK managing director, said: “The rise of the hipster is changing Britain’s economy in some unexpected ways.

"As the number and combined spending of hipsters go up, so too do the fortunes of the ‘hipster service economy’ catering to their needs.”

Rise joy so short

THE novelty of getting a pay rise wears off after just 43 days, a report claims.

That’s how long it takes for people to “level up” spending habits and splash their extra cash, the Direct Line Life Insurance study says.  Seventeen per cent upgrade lifestyles immediately, swapping Greggs for Pret A Manger for instance.

Jane Morgan, of Direct Line Life Insurance, said: “It can be tempting to splurge on something to treat yourself, but it is often a good time to reflect on your financial position.”

Cold realities

WITH heavy snowy on the way, some people may struggle to make it into work. While staff do not have a right to paid time off in such situations, firms do have obligations to staff when winter strikes.

  • EMPLOYERS are legally obliged to provide a reasonable temperature in the workplace and office environments should normally be at least 16C.
  • ALLOW employees to work from home if possible.

Seeds of change

THE Royal Horticultural Society has opened applications for its student and apprenticeship programmes. Successful applicants can earn while they learn, working full-time alongside highly knowledgeable teams in the four RHS gardens around the UK.

The two-year horticulture apprenticeship programme, starting in August, is popular with career changers and school leavers, who learn skills from planting borders and lawn care through to harvesting fruit and vegetables.

RHS students gain more in-depth knowledge, working at RHS Chelsea Flower Show and learning management skills.
