Best Lip Liners 2019 | The Sun UK

A GOOD lip liner is just as essential as a good lipstick.

The best lip liners provide the perfect base for colour, prevent pigment from bleeding, add definition and help lipstick stay for longer.

There are plenty out there to choose from, but it can be hard to weed out the decent from the duds…we're here to help.

Choose wisely, yours can become a multi-use product – you can use it as a liner, an all-over lipstick, an eye pencil and even as a touch of blush.

The original use? A flawless bold lip.

The lip liner gives you a matte base, helping colour to stay put (no need for blotting and re-applying) and creates a sharper edge for the perfectly prominent cupid's bow.

Lip pencils of old were drying but new gen products are creamy and hydrating enough to wear alone.

Just add a touch of clear gloss over the top, et voila, you're done.

You might even want to try out the ombré lip trend, where you line your lips with a darker shade and blend it inwards with a lip brush for a faded out effect.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, fear not. The good news is, most of the best lip liners available are under £20.

1. Make Up For Ever Lip Pencil

  • Make Up For Ever Artist Colour Pencil, £15 from Amazon – buy here

Make Up For Ever's wooden pencils are a great staple to have in any make-up collection and, with 1.41 g of product for only £16, are a serious bargain.

Technically it's a colour pencil and not a lip liner, meaning that it can be used as an eyeliner, blush (just put three dots on your apples and blend with fingers) and for lining lips.

The beauty brand's pencils are grouped together via their shades, such as "The Pinks" and "The Reds" but its "The Corals" that are worth investing in – you won't find brights like this anywhere else.

2. Mac Lip Liner

  • Lip Pencil, £15 from MAC Cosmetics – buy here

Mac's lip range has been a favourite among make-up artists, celebrities and beauty fans of all ages for many years.

With dozens of shades available in the subsections coral, nude, pink, plum and red, you'll be spoilt for choice.

The nude shades spice, soar and whirl are loved by none other than Kylie Jenner.

That's right, her trademark plump nude pout was all down to her favourite lipstick shade Velvet Teddy accompanied by a total of three lip liners.

Talk about dedication.

3. Charlotte Tilbury Liner

  • Lip Cheat Pillow Talk, £16 from Charlotte Tilbury – buy here

The Pillow Talk lip liner from Charlotte Tilbury is the range's best-selling and is classed as a universal nude shade, suiting every skin tone.

It was indeed so popular that the Pillow Talk lipstick was created off the back of its success.

Customers were using this particular liner all over their lips as there was no bullet shade that matched it.

This is a testament to the lip liner's creaminess, as it's so hydrating it can even be used as a lipstick.

For £16 it's an absolute steal and is one of the cheapest products you can buy from the brand.

4. Huda Beauty Lip Contour

  • Huda Beauty Lip Contour, £16 from Feelunique – buy here

If you're a fan of beauty YouTube then chances are you've heard of Huda Kattan and her brand Huda Beauty.

Her beauty brand now covers everything from eyeshadow palettes to foundations, but her lip products are some of her most notable.

There's a range of 18 different shades and most of them come with a matching liquid lipstick.

So your days of hunting for  coordinating colours are over.

5. Urban Decay Lip Pencil

  • 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil, £16 from Urban Decay – buy here

If bright colours are your thing and you need a liner that will last you all day and night, look no further than Urban Decay's 24/7 lip pencil.

It does what it says on the tin (stays put!) and will even remain during a dip in the pool.

With a shade range of 50, including white and black, the possibilities are endless.

6. NYX Lip Liner

  • NYX Professional Make-up Suede Matte Lip Liner, £3 from Feelunique – buy here

For only £4 you can grab one of NYX's matte lip liners…we'd suggest snapping up a whole handful of them, seeing as the price is so low.

With a whopping 55 colour range, NYX has covered all bases with everything from a bright blue to jade green.

The mid-range brand is often referred to as the step between high street and high-end make-up and we can see why the quality versus price is exceptional.
