Coronation Street star Rob Mallard’s life off screen including relationship with co-star

Coronation Street staple Daniel Osborne has faced more than his fair share of love, loss and heartbreak on the cobbles in recent years.

The popular soap character devastated fans as they watched him lose the love of his life Sinead Tinker to cervical cancer in 2019, leaving behind one child, a son named Bertie.

Since then the teacher has dabbled in only a handful of romances, including with former sex worker Nicky Wheatley, before finally finding true love once more with Daisy Midgeley, with the couple even preparing to wed.

Yet away from the soap, the actor behind Weatherfield’s favourite teacher, Rob Mallard, has opened up about his own life – which thankfully isn’t quite as eventful as Daniel’s.

But what exactly is his life like off screen?

Early Career

Born and raised in Manchester, Rob Mallard first cut his acting teeth in a short video called Bottom of the Ninth, all the way back in 2003.

From there he went to star in a number of guest roles, including in Ememrdale and Fresh Meat, before he finally bagged the role of Daniel Osborne, Ken Barlow’s long lost son, in Coronation Street in 2016.

One year after bagging the coveted soap role, Rob publicly came out as gay during an interview with Gay Times back in 2017 (although later admitted he had been out to his family for a good deal longer) and "never planned to keep [his sexuality] quiet.”

Co-star Romance

That very same year, just like his character, Rob managed to find love on the Cobbles, however in his case it was with co-star Daniel Brocklebank who plays the mild mannered vicar Billy Mayhew.

The couple dated briefly and even saw Rob mention Daniel while collecting a British Soap Award.

Rob said in his acceptance speech: "Even though this is fantastic, Dan, you’re the best thing I’ve ever taken home.”

Unfortunately, despite having a good rapport and showing clear chemistry, the relationship wasn’t sustainable as the pressures of dating and working together placed too much of a strain on their budding romance.

Thankfully, since splitting, the couple have continued to remain close friends.

A source toldThe Sun's TV column: "It was a lot of pressure for both of them to be working on the same show and going out—in the end something had to give.

"They decided to part ways a couple of weeks ago but they’re still great friends and hope to remain that way."

Unlucky in love

Just two months after his break-up with Daniel, Rob began dating Ben Perryman, with the couple publicly confirming their relationship in a sweet Instagram post.

Sharing a loved up snap of the couple together, Rob wrote: "Some people walk into your life at the right time, some people exit your life at the right time, we’re all here for a purpose and that’s to find happiness. You decide what your happiness is.”

Fans were clearly delighted by the development and flooded the comments section with messages of congratulations, including one who said: "Congratulations to you both @benperryman so happy for you!”

Ben also gushed over Rob in a social media post after they attended the Coronation Street Christmas party, with Ben saying: "If anyone could teach me how to spell happy all over again it would be him.

"Everything about you is just perfect. Robert Mallard you’re my hero.”

After enjoying a good few months together, the couple eventually split in 2019 after the relationship reached it’s “natural end”.

A representative for the actor confirmed the news at the time saying: "Rob and Ben are no longer together.

"It was a mutual separation. Both would appreciate privacy in this personal matter."

Romance rumours

Although unconfirmed by the star, reports recently emerged that Rob had grown close to modelling agent Matthew Martin, after they were spotted together in a series of sweet Instagram photos alongside Matt’s mum and sister.

The speculation initially sparked after Matt’s mum and sister visited the Corrie set before Christmas, with a source tellingThe Sun: "Rob seems loved up and it’s so nice to see. It’s like he’s completely smitten.

"Everyone is hoping this relationship is The One because Matthew’s a really nice bloke.

"Rob fits right in with his family and the cast who have met Matthew really like him.”

Despite the speculation and romance rumours, neither Rob nor Matthew have ever confirmed that are in a relationship.

Serious health condition

One unexpected fact revealed by Rob during an interview on This Morning is that he suffers from an essential tremor – a nervous system (neurological) disorder that causes involuntary and rhythmic shaking which can affect almost any part of your body, but mostly occurs in the hands.

Speaking on the popular daytime show during tremor awareness month, Rob explained: "I was diagnosed with an essential tremor when I was 14 but I didn't quite realise how serious it was until I was in my mid-20’s."

He went on: "You assume with shaking it's an old person's thing and most older people do have a slight tremor," Rob said.

"But it's actually amazingly common in young people and it's often misdiagnosed as anxiety disorders or people on the street might think something bad.

"They might think that you are on a comedown or that you're withdrawing from something or anything when it actually is just brain chemistry – just something going wrong, neurons in the brain firing incorrectly and it cause involuntary shaking in certain parts of the body.”

It wasn’t the first time Rob had publicly addressed his tremor either, as he previously appeared on the show and was spotted with shaking hands, leading many fans to presume the worst.

At the time, he tweeted: "Before any other papers write about this 'news' let me disabuse you: I have an essential tremor. Phew! Feels so good to come out.#notawkward."

Reappearing on the programme, Rob said he felt “exposed” after his tremor was being questioned among viewers.

He said: "I've had this – it's been nearly ten years I've been aware of it now. My solution to this was to hide and manage it, because in the job that I'm in, it may have a detrimental effect on my ability to get cast. So it was something that I tried to keep a lid on, but then it was exposed live on TV."
