We’ve finally made it to election day, and both sides are predicting that they’ll win with either a red wave or blue wave sweeping the nation. But in a tweet from Donald Trump Jr., perhaps it’s a red wave across the globe? Instead of the more traditional, and arguably rational, map of the United States, the President’s son posted a picture of the entire globe that’s predominantly red with the caption “Okay, finally got around to making my electoral map prediction. #2020Election #VOTE”
Most of the map is red, including Antarctica and only California, New York, China, Mexico, Liberia and India were blue. It’s not quite clear if he’s trying to make a joke, and the Twitter responses are a mix of vicious and confused, with people weighing in from around the world with comments like this one, “Hi, British person here. We’re not a red country. Even the most conservative people I know hate Trump and his incompetence.” And this one, “pls nobody in Portugal wants trump or even takes him seriously”.
Another user was baffled as to what Jr. was trying to do. “So for the past four years, they’ve been screaming about ‘The dems let illegals vote!!’ and now he’s just… saying the entire world can vote in the US election? I don’t understand what his point is.”
People can't understand his red and blue country choices
People are also confused as to his selection of countries. One user replied, “Why are parts of Norway not colored in? Why is Armenia not colored in?? Why is part of Ukraine not colored in? How about UAE? Djibouti? I swear a kindergartener made this MS paint usin ass”
Some think he confused India and Iran since the assumption would be that Iran wouldn’t like Trump and India would. “Oh my god he thinks India is Iran doesn’t he” tweeted one user and another “I’m pretty sure Don Jr. confused Iran and India on a world map. That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.”
Most damning for some was seeing that Kashmir was given to Pakistan, which some have called out as a big mistake, like in this tweet “He has no idea what kind of blunder he made , does he ?! Although Kashmir is an independent nation but many in India won’t accept that.” Though there are others who celebrate the choice. “Thank you, Donald Trump Jr, for recognizing Jammu and Kashmir as part of Pakistan” (via Twitter).
And why would assigning Kashmir as connected to Pakistan cause a stir? According to the BBC, the dispute over Kashmir has been going on for over seven decades, and that today, “Delhi and Islamabad both claim Kashmir in full, but control only parts of it — territories recognised internationally as ‘Indian-administered Kashmir’ and ‘Pakistan-administered Kashmir.'”
