Headlines broke on Friday evening as it was finally confirmed that husband and wife Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have officially filed for a divorce, ending their seven year marriage.

They famously got together back in 2012, after being friends for years beforehand, and soon embarked on a whirlwind romance that played out in front of cameras as Kim continued to film for reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashian’s – which will premiere its final season this year.

Longtime fans of Kim and family were thrilled when the two finally got together, after she was left heartbroken when her and former partner Kris Humphries famously only managed to last 72 days of marriage before filing for divorce.

When Kim and Kanye first got together, Kim’s style was a world away from the high-end looks we recognise her for now.

Still in her full glam stage post Kris, Kim was all about bodycon dresses, oversized sunglasses (we can thank Paris Hilton for these) and teetering Louboutin's – there was certainly nothing cutting edge about Kim’s style back when she was first courting Kanye.

In fact, Kim, alongside sisters and business partners Kourtney and Khloe launched their former clothing line Kardashian Kollection with British brand Dorothy Perkins, something modern day Kim wouldn’t dream of.

In 2018, during an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashian’s, Kim revealed that Kanye would send her emails telling her what she should and shouldn’t wear.

"[Kanye] sent me a whole email like, 'You cannot wear big glasses anymore. It's all about tiny little glasses, he sent me, like, millions of '90s photos with tiny little glasses," she explained.

This wasn’t a new thing, when they first started dating Kim famously said on their reality show "Kanye's definitely inspired me to be a little bit more of an individual. I think my style is just evolving and changing and I think it should."

Kim Kardashian turns 40: We look back at the reality star's most iconic looks

During a panel discussion at Business of Fashion’s West summit in Los Angeles in 2018 Kim relayed Kanye telling her that she “had the worst style". “He was really nice about it and cleaned out my whole closet," she explained.

“I probably had 250 pairs of shoes and when we were done cleaning it out, I had two pairs left and I cried,” Kardashian said.

It was during this time that Kanye West introduced the star to designers such Lanvin and Givenchy, both of whom Kim has worn and worked with on countless occasions in previous years.

Kim and Kanye are seen here together as they host The New Year's Eve Countdown at At The Mirage In Las Vegas back in 2012, and we can already see the difference in Kim’s style thanks to Kanye.

Whilst just months before she was promoting her clothing line in Dorothy Perkins, Kim was now sporting a sheer Julien MacDonald dress whilst pregnant with their first child North.

But despite the big difference between this look and the star’s previous style, Kim still had a long way to go before she would achieve the style we know her for now.

Kim and sister Kourtney definitely caused a stir last year in March 2020 when they attended Paris Fashion week in matching latex Balenciaga looks – 2012 and Kim would never dream of such an outrageous look.

We can’t help but wonder whether 2021 Kim post Kanye will stick with more classic styles now she isn’t under Kanye’s controlling fashion eye.

Kanye, who started his own fashion brand Yeezy back in 2015 when he originally collaborated with sportswear brand Adidas, seemed to have a styling influence over the whole family.

The Kardahian’s and co, who were once known for their glamorous looks, bouncy blow dries and sky high heels, all had a makeunder – and started to sport grungier looks instead. Even Scott Disick who was recognised for his preppy looks and coloured loafers swapped his traditional looks for tracksuits and Yeezy trainers.

The A-list clan all came together to watch Kanye’s 2016 Yeezy Season 3 at Madison Square Garden in matching nude looks – and we can certainly see Kanye’s influence as the gang poses in over the top furs, sequins and sheer looks.

Kim and Kanye are seen at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in February 2020, one of their last red carpets together, with Kim in a distressed corseted gown by Alexander McQueen, and Kanye in a leather pantsuit.

Kim even dyed her famous black locks blonde from time to time as she claimed Kanye preferred it, writing on their fourth wedding anniversary: "Hi, I'm back blonde. Kanye's favorite is blonde, so I did it for our anniversary."

It’s certainly been a journey for the pair, with four children, seven years of marriage and a nearly 10 year relationship, the billionaire couple have called time and Kim’s style evolution is over.

We can’t wait to see how Kim dresses without the influence of Kanye, something tells us the best is yet to come…
