I can't get over my dog's death and even cry when she's just mentioned

My dog was a 12-year-old Labrador and I’ve had her for as long as I can remember.

When I was talking with my friend and his mother today, she said she was sorry to hear about my dog and I had to excuse myself to run to the toilet.

My friend said: “Were you crying?” and I said, “No, I’m OK,” but I’d been sobbing there. How can I get over losing her?

DEIDRE SAYS: It is sad to lose a beloved pet. You don’t have to hide the fact you are distressed. Any real friend will understand that men cry too – it’s normal and healthy.

If you find you are still very upset in a month or so, you can find support through Blue Cross pet bereavement (bluecross.org.uk/pbss, 0800 096 6606).
