Labor in new row over whether to back gas

Labor MPs have split over a federal plan to open up new gas reserves in a new sign of disunity on climate change and whether Australian should phase out the fossil fuel.

Several caucus members backed a move to halt federal funding for new gas developments in the Beetaloo Basin is the Northern Territory in a call to stop fracking and hasten the shift to renewable energy.

But other Labor MPs spoke up for the use of gas and secured the numbers for a formal decision to vote against a motion brought by independent MP Zali Steggall that seeks to stop the $50 million federal outlay.

More to come.
