Sophie Countess of Wessex and Meghan Markle are both full-time members of the Royal Family. The countess married Prince Edward, 54, at Windsor castle on 19 June 1999 and Meghan married Prince Harry, 34, at the same venue on 19 May 2018. The Countess and Duchess were spotted out together just weeks after Meghan’s wedding and it is believed the Queen hoped the pair could become allies. The royal’s body language revealed how Sophie stepped up to this role and has watched over Meghan from the beginning, body language expert Judi James, told Express.co.uk.
These poses define them as two very different characters, which might not work in a friendship, but which can be a huge strength if Sophie is taking the role of royal ally
Sophie is often considered to be close to the Queen, which is why the monarch may have wanted to pair her up with the Duchess of Sussex.
Judi told Express.co.uk: “The Queen’s body language with Sophie always suggests her daughter-in-law is a bit of a confidante, with Sophie’s relaxed, constantly calm and upbeat demeanor seeming to allow the Queen to relax more in her company, too.
“Sophie always looks like the ‘no fuss’ royal and her long-term marriage to the royal prince who once seemed the least likely to settle down after some fickle career choices suggests she’s a great stabilizing influence and might make the perfect royal mentor for Meghan.”
Meghan and Sophie were first spotted out together shortly after Meghan married Prince Harry.
Judi explained: “Watching Sophie and Meghan together it’s hard to imagine the pair would naturally become close friends but there is some evidence that Sophie could be offering her services as an ally which, if Kate really is now distanced and given the fact that Camilla was last seen as a ‘mentoring’ role with Princess Diana pre-marriage, might be an offer that Meghan could be grateful of.”
Just weeks after Meghan’s wedding, the pair shared a carriage for the Royal Ascot at Ascot Racecourse and their body language suggested Meghan would be able to look to Sophie for advice.
“These poses define them as two very different characters, which might not work in a friendship, but which can be a huge strength if Sophie is taking the role of royal ally,” Judi explained.
This encounter showed Sophie was looking out for Meghan and was on hand to offer help if needed.
Judi said: “Meghan seems to become slightly more formal with her body language when she appears with Sophie but Sophie’s eye-gaze and expressions suggest she’s happy to adopt what looks like a quasi-parental role to ensure Meghan feels happy and comfortable.
“Meghan is superbly confident in her own right so it’s important that Sophie shows no sign of pushing things if her advice or help isn’t needed.”
Both women have very different backgrounds, but their body language at Ascot suggested they may have more in common than expected.
“Meghan looks super-poised in these photos, sitting upright and with her mouth opened in an upturned smile that is aimed at the crowds. Sophie’s eyes are also on the crowds, although her head-tilt and suppressed smile that tilts the corners of her mouth down suggest she is communicating quietly with Meghan here,” Judi said.
“The two women might display contrasting lifestyle traits, with the very glamorous and fashionable Meghan being a passionate speaker and campaigner who seems led by a determination to change things for the better.
“This is different from the much more low-key, low-profile Sophie who seems immersed in the traditions of the royal family, but their mirrored, synchronized body language often suggests they could also be rather like-minded about a lot of things.”
Although the pair are not often seen together, they appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace in July 2018 to mark the centenary of the RAF and they seemed to share a friendly smile.
Judi said: “Appearing on the royal balcony it’s Sophie who moves away from her husband to step closer to Meghan here, communicating with her to make her smile behind the back of the Queen and over Charles and Camilla.”
Sophie, Countess of Wessex, may have inspired Meghan and her sister-in-law Kate Middleton, 37, through her royal style.
