Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons were among the supermarkets that introduced social distancing rules. The retailers have given an update on the latest guidance to follow in stores.
At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, social distancing rules limited how many shoppers could enter most stores.
This led to long queues outside most retailers as fewer people could shop at one time.
Last month, the government changed guidance in England and issued the “one metre plus” rule, which allowed more customers to shop at one time.
While all supermarkets must enforce face coverings in Scotland, England and Northern Ireland, they have different shopping rules.
The supermarket chain has continued to offer hygiene measures for shoppers.
Customers could still be asked to queue depending on how busy the store is, according to the latest updates.
The Tesco website states: “Where necessary, we’ll limit the flow of people coming into our stores to make sure they don’t get too busy.
“Hand sanitisers are being placed around our stores for customers and colleagues to use, as well as extra cleaning products to wipe down your trolley or basket.
“In some stores, we’ll introduce directional floor markings and new signs to create a safe flow of movement around the store. New floor markings will help you to keep a safe distance from others while waiting to pay.”
Asda has explained it will adjust social distancing rules based on the official government guidance.
A statement said: “Keeping our customers and colleagues safe has been our priority throughout lockdown and this remains unchanged as social distancing measures are gradually eased.
“As parts of the UK refine their safety measures and new changes are implemented, we continue to support these across our stores in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.”
The retailer is also focusing on the hygiene measures that are in place for customers.
“We take the safety of our customers and colleagues very seriously,” the statement continued.
“We have a number of hygiene measures in our stores, including the use of sanitiser spray and increased cleaning in busy areas. We have also placed perspex screens at checkouts and kiosks to protect our colleagues.”
Customers at the supermarket could still be asked to queue as limits remain on how many shoppers are in stores at one time.
“We have limited the number of people in our stores and at our ATMs at any one time,” Sainsbury’s website said.
“We have also put queuing systems in place outside stores and ask you to queue at a safe distance of two metres apart.”
Shoppers are asked to keep a safe distance from each other and pay with contactless card where possible.
The supermarket giant is continuing to update guidance based on the government advice.
Customer limits are still in place which could lead to queues outside.
A statement said: “In close consultation with government and Public Health England, we have introduced a series of social distancing measures to protect our colleagues and customers.
“There is a staggered entry system into all our stores, limiting the number of customers and colleagues inside at any one time to ensure social distancing.”
