Well, bingo website Tombola have taken the time to analyse the most iconic and well-loved soap characters on British and Australian television, and cross referenced them with the most common names of 2019 to see which names are on the rise.
Looking at the data, it was found that the most popular soap character name for girls was Betty.
Think Betty Eagleton from Emmerdale or Corrie’s Betty Williams.
Second, is Bianca, like Patsy Palmer’s character on EastEnders, shortly followed by Peggy and Rita.
Pat, aka Pat Butcher of Albert Square, comes in next, then Vera, Lisa, Kathleen and Sally.
Interestingly, the name Sally has been up 47 per cent in popularity during the past year.
As for the boys baby names, Jack takes the crown as the most popular soap character name of last year.
One of Coronation Street’s most popular characters has this moniker, and it was extremely common in 2019 with over 3,381 Jack’s born.
Eric, as in Eric Pollard of Emmerdale fame, took second prize, followed by Zac and then Ian, of course Ian Beale of EastEnders being one of most celebrated examples.
Next in line were Warren, Tony, Harold, Grant and Pat, short for Patrick this time!
The name Harold, taken from one of Australia’s favourite soaps, Neighbours, experienced a spike of eight per cent last year, whereas Warren has actually increased by over a quarter, at 21 per cent.
