Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge is one of the most beloved royal women of all time. Thousands of people all over the world follow her movements, emulating her style and even her signature blowout.
Although Kate is now a wife and mother of three young children, many royal fans are still interested in the early days of her romance with Prince William.
The story of how Prince William first became captivated with Kate’s athletic good looks remains an inspirational, sweet story. Recently, the designer responsible for the legendary sheer dress worn by Kate opened up, revealing her unique part in their love story.
When did Kate Middleton first meet Prince William?
Kate and Prince William met innocently enough. The two first crossed paths at the prestigious University of Saint Andrews in 2001.
They met through mutual friends and even though reports say that Middleton was somewhat starstruck when she first met Prince William, they became fast friends. The early days of their relationship were innocent enough, with the two of them sharing a mutual interest in sports and athletic activities.
Reportedly, at the time of their first meeting, both Prince William and Kate were dating other people. Kate was involved with a medical student a few years older than she was, while Prince William was dating another fellow student.
Still, the seeds of romance were planted in those early days — it would just take some time for them to blossom. By the time Kate signed up to participate in a school charity fashion show, around a year after their initial meeting, both she and Prince William were once again single.

To all the incredible volunteers across the UK this #VolunteersWeek: Thank you. @giveusashoutinsta @consciousyouthuk @volunteersweek_2020 The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge marked Volunteers’ Week by speaking to volunteers across the UK to thank them for the amazing support that they provide to their communities. The Duke has been volunteering for #Shout85258, the UK’s first 24/7 crisis text line, launched in 2019 by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex — as one of more than 2000 Crisis Volunteers trained to support anyone, anytime, whatever their crisis may be.
In 2002, Kate volunteered to wear a sheer dress and walk the runway for a charity fashion show. The dress, which featured a black bikini underneath the mesh-style see-through garment, was created for an assignment titled “The Art of Seduction.”
It seems as though the dress did the trick – once Prince William saw Kate on the runway in the dress, he reportedly began thinking of her in a romantic way, and they began dating not long after the fashion show.
Recently, the designer who created the sheer dress opened up, admitting that it was pure coincidence that Kate happened to wear the dress that she designed. She said: “I didn’t know who Kate Middleton was and I didn’t put her in it. It was just pure chance!”
Still, the designer, Charlotte Todd, is happy to be part of royal history: “I’m thrilled. Everyone says that the fashion show was when the romance started, so a small part of me will always be part of royal history. It’s madness!”

Today we mark the 72nd birthday of the NHS, in a year when it was needed more than ever as the nation responds to COVID-19. Today, The Duke and Duchess visited the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn to thank staff for their efforts in helping their community. Whether you are existing staff, former staff members who came out of retirement, volunteers or key workers – we thank you for the resilience, perseverance and hope you’ve shown our nation.
The fashion show helped to initiate a truly legendary romance. Prince William and Kate started dating around the year 2002 and have been together ever since. They got engaged in 2010, after eight years together, and were married in a beautiful ceremony in 2011.
Over the years, Kate and Prince William have welcomed three children and weathered scores of major life events. Through it all, they have remained each other’s strongest support system.
These days, Prince William and Kate are busier than ever, as they prepare for even greater responsibility in the days ahead. Still, it seems likely that the two often fondly recall their college days and the fateful night that they first looked upon each other as romantic partners and not just good friends.
