Q: Maybe signing with the Heat is just not that attractive, seeing how the Heat are currently in the play-in position in the standings. There are a lot of teams in better position out there. – Robert.
A: Exactly. A player often will take a buyout in order to pursue a deep playoff run, possibly with visions of therefore restoring value ahead of free agency, or at least savoring postseason success. That leaves the Heat in a less-than-desirable spot on the buyout market now that it stands at No. 7 in the East. A player who signs with the Heat could now be running the risk of only one or two play-in games and not even a true berth in the postseason. The Heat had a chance to move within a half-game of the No. 5 East seed with a victory Wednesday in Brooklyn. Now there are optics in the standings that are less than desirable.
Q: I would say Kevin Love adds shooting, but we also need a guard/wing that can score as well. A big man alone won’t do. – C.B.N.
A: You can’t be greedy on the buyout market. And you certainly can’t be greedy on the buyout market when also attempting to remain below the luxury tax. Kevin Love, alone, would provide a needed jolt. But Kevin Love and Will Barton would make the Heat rotation far closer to whole than it has been most of the season. This remains a team that needs size, scoring and shooting. But it also is a team that, for better or worse, prioritizes defense, which leaves the question of how much compromise Erik Spoelstra is willing to make.
Q: We should put Jamaree Bouyea on a two-way and cut Orlando Robinson if Omer Yurtseven is coming back healthy. – Flair.
A: Which is among the possibilities. The fact that Orlando Robinson played only four minutes in Brooklyn was curious, albeit with the Nets going with Ben Simmons as their backup center. At one point, it appeared Orlando would be essential to the Heat during the playoff race. Now, the four remaining NBA games on his two-way contract might be enough for a bridge to Omer Yurtseven’s return. And if Orlando runs out of two-way days, then a replacement two-way player certainly could be a consideration.
