Sony Open – betting tips

Hot tip: Webb Simpson – 11-1
The world No 8 is right at the top of the market for a good reason – his two wins last year signalled a big resurgence in his fortunes, and he seemed to be in contention every week.

Finished third in this event last year, and the former US Open champion shook off the rust with a top twenty at the Tournament of Champions last week.

Mid price: Ryan Palmer – 28-1

Another player who has shown a liking for Hawaii – fourth in last week's Tournament of Champions and filled the same place in this event 12 months ago.

It is worrying that he has not won since 2010, but he has racked up six runner-up finishes since his last victory and his improved consistency has hoisted him into the top 25 of the world rankings.

Longshot: Brendan Steele – 125-1

It is hard to understand why the bookmakers are so dismissive of Steele's chance of going one better than last year, when he was edged out in a play-off by Cameron Smith.

Steele took a three shot lead into the final round a year ago, and was still two clear with a couple of holes to play.

The three-time PGA Tour winner suffered a major slump two years ago, but is headed in the right direction again.
