Maybe Amir Johnson and Joel Embiid wanted to see how social media was taking their playoff loss.
The 76ers big men were caught checking Johnson’s phone on the bench during Philadelphia’s 111-102 loss to the Nets on Game 1 of their Eastern Conference playoff series at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday. Johnson was not even active for the game.
“It’s completely unacceptable and we will deal with it internally, very soon, 76ers coach Brent Brown said after the loss. “It’s not something we are and certainly don’t condone.”
ESPN commentator Doris Burke also took issue during the broadcast with the players being on the phone while the game was still going on. The Nets led 104-88 with 6:20 to play in the fourth quarter when it happened. Burke speculated they were sending or looking at a text message.
“This is really troubling to me,” Burke said. “Amir Johnson is not active, but his in on the bench and that’s a cell phone. I can’t definitely say, but all of us know what a text message looks like. Like, what is that thing doing out to me.”
Embiid scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the loss.
