John Motson’s final game for Match of the Day was between Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion before he retired from the BBC in 2018.

The Baggies, who presented ‘Motty’ with a commemorative shirt at the time, have paid tribute to Motson – who they described as ‘a true master of his craft’.

Gary Lineker, the face of Match of the Day, has paid tribute to legendary BBC commentator John Motson.

Lineker described Motson as ‘the voice of football in this country for generations’.

Deeply saddened to hear that John Motson has died. A quite brilliant commentator and the voice of football in this country for generations. He’ll be very much missed. RIP Motty.

John Motson dead at 77
