Liverpool fans file almost 900 claims against UEFA after chaotic scenes at last year’s Champions League final in Paris which they were initially blamed for

  • Law firm Leigh Day issued the group injury claim on Monday in Liverpool
  • An independent review laid ‘primary responsibility’ with UEFA in February

Lawyers representing Liverpool supporters who were caught up in the chaos ahead of, and after, the Reds’ Champions League final against Real Madrid in Paris have formally filed over 900 claims, according to reports.  

Sportsmail’s Dominic King previously disclosed that over 2600 fans were seeking compensation following the chaos at the Stade de Paris, but on Monday, Leigh Day – the law firm engaged by the supporters – issued a group personal injury claim on the behalf of 887 fans at the Liverpool District Registry of the High Court.

As per Sky Sports, the firm is bringing the claim on the basis that UEFA failed to provide at ‘a safe and secure environment’ at the storied French stadium, and that the fans who suffered either physical or psychological injuries are owed legal liability. 

An independent review found in February that UEFA had ‘primary responsibility’ with the French Police and French Football Federation also culpable for failings that ‘almost led to a disaster’.

Following the report, which included 21 recommendations for hosting and organising events of a similar scale, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin apologised for what had happened at the final and to the fans themselves, saying that he was relieved ‘nothing terrible happened’.

To add to the chaos outside the ground, French police sprayed some calm fans with tear gas 

Speaking in Lisbon at Wednesday’s UEFA Congress, where the president was re-elected to his position after running unopposed, Ceferin seemed to allude to the shameful events at last year’s final.  

‘We must never forget the mistakes of the past and we must remain humble at all times,’ Ceferin noted. ‘Nothing can ever be taken for granted.

‘Unfortunately, unlike goalkeepers, leaders can never keep a ‘clean sheet’. No leader can boast an unblemished record, however much they invest and however passionate, professional or experienced they are.

‘I am no different and UEFA is no different. The most important thing is to understand the mistake and change, not to repeat them.’

UEFA announced in March that they would be refunding all the Liverpool supporters who attended the final in a £3.5million pay-out as part of their apology for initial insinuations that the blame may have lain with the fans. 

The independent report noted that it was only the calmness of the Reds fans on the day that prevented a ‘mass fatality catastrophe’.
