South Florida, Marshall set to clash in Gasparilla Bowl

South Florida gets to play in its home stadium, and it’ll take all the help it can get after going on a five-game losing streak to sour a 7-0 start. The Bulls beat just one team that’s going to a bowl during those first seven games, and all five losses came against strong teams who got postseason berths.

The defense has been the biggest problem, especially against the run, allowing 245 yards per game and getting hit for 220 yards or more in six of the last seven games, plus 22 touchdowns during that span.

Marshall might not be special at running the ball, but it’ll give it a shot after pounding past Virginia Tech for close to 7 yards per carry and two scores in the loss. The Herd have one of the nation’s better run defenses — no one has hit 200 yards on this group — allowing opponents less than 3 yards per carry.

The Marshall offense has a big problem giving the ball away, turning the ball over 24 times with two or more in seven games. South Florida will need the mistakes to make up for an inconsistent attack that can run the ball, but has an offensive line that’s about to have a rough day against a devastating Herd pass rush.
