The ESPN Daily: The fastest high schooler ever

THIS KID CAN FLY

High schooler demolishes 100-meter dash … OK, so he apparently had a 4.2-mph tailwind aiding him, but let’s just marvel at Texas high schooler Matthew Boling putting up a 9.98-second 100-meter dash. That’s more than 22 miles per hour, which a lot of us would have trouble getting up to on, like, a bicycle. Next stop: Olympics? Read More

THINGS TO CARE ABOUT

Fixing the 3-pointer … The NBA, as anyone who has watched it at all the past few years can tell you, is obsessed with the 3-pointer. It’s getting to the point that whoever has the most dominant 3-point shooter has an almost-overwhelming advantage (see: Curry, Steph). In an excerpt from his upcoming book “SprawlBall: A Visual Tour of the New Era of the NBA,” Kirk Goldsberry imagines ways to fix it — from simple changes to radical ones. Read More

“The basketball gods will not honor disrespect in that way …” You know that dude at the gym who maaaaybe calls a few too many fouls that most people would just let go? Over at the Undefeated, there’s a case being made that James Harden is kinda becoming that guy, and disrespecting basketball’s unwritten rules in the process. Read More

REMEMBER WHEN?

On this date in 1991, Rickey Henderson broke Lou Brock’s all-time stolen base record by swiping his 939th. He ended up retiring with 1,406, which is absolutely bonkers. Right now (with Rajai Davis in the minors and Jacoby Ellsbury injured), Dee Gordon is your active stolen base leader, and he’d have to add ELEVEN HUNDRED steals to top Rickey.

WHAT’S ON TONIGHT?

Reds at Mets (7 p.m. ET, ESPN+): Neither of these teams are setting the world on fire, but check this out: Right now, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso has the hardest-hit home run so far this season, with a 118.3-mph blast earlier this April.

Astros at Twins (8 p.m. ET, ESPN): Jose Altuve’s statline looks very un-Jose Altuve-ish right now — his batting average has plummeted while his home run rate has gone up. Imagine if he returns to his batting form while maintaining that power surge. He’d be, let us run the numbers here, uh, extremely good.

Blazers at Nuggets (9 p.m. ET, TNT): The Blazers lost Game 1 of this series, and Damian Lillard thinks his team’s jawing at referees was at least partly to blame. We’ll see if a new approach helps them turn things around against the Nuggets before the series goes to Portland.
