Tottenham next manager odds – Antonio Conte 'heavily backed' to replace sacked Nuno Espirito Santo as Spurs boss

ANTONIO CONTE is the leading candidate to replace Nuno Espirito Santo as Tottenham manager.

That's according to bookmakers Betfair, who've installed the Italian at 2/1 to accept the vacant position in North London.

Espirito Santo, 47, was relieved of his duties on Monday after just 17 games in charge.

Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Manchester United was Tottenham's fifth loss in their last seven Premier League matches.

The string of poor results have left Spurs in eighth position and 10 points behind league leaders Chelsea.

Chairman Daniel Levy was said to be 'furious' with the manner of their latest defeat and has pulled the trigger after discussions with Fabio Paratici.

Paratici told the club's official website: "I know how much Nuno and his coaching staff wanted to succeed and I regret that we have had to take this decision.

"Nuno is a true gentleman and will always be welcome here. We should like to thank him and his coaching staff and wish them well for the future."

Spurs will be looking to make a swift appointment ahead of matches against Vitesse, Everton and Leeds.

And Conte is the frontrunner with bookmakers Betfair.

The 52-year-old remains a free agent having left Inter Milan after guiding them to a first Serie A title in over a decade.

He also lifted the Premier League title with Chelsea during his debut campaign and won the FA Cup the following season.

The Italian was in advanced negotiations with Spurs over the summer following the departure of Jose Mourinho, but wasn’t 'convinced' by the project.

Betfair Spokesperson, Sam Rosbottom said: "With the news of Nuno Espirito Santo leaving Spurs, the hunt is on for a new manager and former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is the favourite at 2/1.

"The Italian was well backed over the weekend with his odds being cut from 15/2 late last week.

"Looking at other possible candidates, Graham Potter and Paulo Fonseca are joint second favourites at 5/1, while former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is 14/1 to make a sensational return."
