During the latest rerun of A Place in the Sun, Channel 4 presenter Scarlette Douglas was on a mission to find Maureen the perfect holiday home in Majacar on the Costa de Almeria. The house hunter explained she had been visiting southern Spain for nearly 30 years and felt she wanted to retire there permanently. However, when they reached the third property, Maureen got emotional as she explained she had dreamed of moving there with her husband Ian who had sadly passed away.
Maureen brought her brother-in-law Dave along to help her choose the right property.
The guest, who had a budget of £90,000 to spend, told Scarlette she was looking for a two-bedroom property with a terrace and sea views.
The first property Scarlette took Maureen to, was a two-bedroom apartment priced at just under £89,000.
Despite loving the sea views, Maureen felt the apartment wasn’t located close enough to shops and restaurants.
Keen to meet Maureen’s criteria, the next property they visited was closer to amenities and came with three bedrooms. It also had plenty of outdoor space and a roof terrace.
“This feels more like a home,” the house hunter commented. “And that is what I want.”
The second property seemed to impress Maureen and Dave, as the house hunter added: “A definite improvement on the first property.”
The third property Scarlette took the duo to, was a property Maureen had seen advertised online.
“I’ve been looking at this property for a year now,” the buyer explained. “If it’s at all possible I’d like to see that one next.”
Scarlette replied: “It’s always important to see properties in the flesh.”
Maureen told the property expert, she and her late husband Ian had been wanting to move to Spain for a fresh start.
The holiday home Maureen wanted to see was a five-bedroom townhouse in Turre.
“I hope I’m not disappointed when I get inside,” she admitted.
Scarlette continued: “Remember this is property number three, if this isn’t right, I will do my best to find you what you’re looking for.”
“Is it something you’ve been looking at before with Ian?”
As Maureen broke down in tears, she recalled: “I did show Ian this but it’s difficult. I couldn’t be too enthusiastic about moving out here while there was a question mark hanging over his health.”
Scarlette told her: “But by the sound of things Maureen, he wanted you to do this regardless and be here and have the chapter for you.”
“Sorry,” Maureen apologised before Scarlette reassured her: “Don’t apologise. Look, Dave’s here, I’m here.
“We can see how important this is to you and we’re going to try and find the right property for you that will help you and set you off on your next chapter.”
After the viewing, Maureen fell in love with the townhouse but wasn’t sure about moving away from Mojacar.
The fourth property Maureen viewed was priced below her budget at £76,000, although, it needed a bit of renovation work done to it.
The fifth holiday home was another winner for Scarlette as Maureen seemed impressed with the two-bedroom property in Mojacar.
However, when it came to making a decision, Maureen couldn’t make a decision and explained she needed more time to think about it.
A Place in the Sun airs weekdays at 3pm on Channel 4.
