AEW is set for another huge debut on Dynamite this week.
All Elite Wrestling boss Tony Khan has promised a new star will be appearing on Wednesday night’s show, and he vowed they will be the latest name to break down the Forbidden Door.
Following Friday night’s Rampage show, he tweeted: ‘As referenced on #AEWRampage, I have a surprise: on #AEWDynamite Live on @TBSNetwork a top wrestler will walk through the Forbidden Door this Wednesday and debut in @AEW.
‘More info to come. Thank you to everyone who joined us for a great Rampage tonight! See you Wednesday on TBS!’
The AEW chief has got people talking and even hinted the debutante could be someone from WWE as he admitted he’s open to stars from companies they’re not necessarily ‘on good terms with’.
He teased: ‘The Forbidden Door can be opened for anyone from any wrestling promotion in the world, whether or not it’s a company @AEW is on good terms with, even if it’s someone from a company that’s open for business.
‘They’re also welcome to slam the door in the face of their prior company.’
There’s a lot to unpack with the second tweet, even if a most likely scenario could be someone like Keith Lee debuting, with the Limiteless One among those whose 90-day non-compete clauses expired this week.
Keeping that line of thinking, other potential names include the likes of Keith’s wife Mia Yim, as well as Karrion Kross and Scarlett Bordeaux.
The idea the new arrival could ‘slam the door in the face of their prior company’ is also interesting, with some wondering if Mustafa Ali – who recently had his release request denied by WWE – could somehow jump ship.
Other possibilities include the likes of Toni Storm and Jeff Hardy, with Ali unlikely given that he’s still under contract.
It’s not stopped fans speculating though, especially given Khan’s ‘open for business’ line.
It’s a phrase people within WWE have used for a while now, and then-NXT boss Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque used it last year when asked about AEW working with IMPACT Wrestling, and the possibility of WWE following suit.
He told Metro.co.uk at the time: ‘Look, in what you’ve seen in the past – Progress, ICW, Evolve, all those things – yeah, we’re open for business in a lot of ways.
‘People’s thoughts, misperceptions, they’re perceived knowledge of what we do, how we think, is often greatly misinterpreted and not necessarily accurate.
‘Are we open to the right business opportunities? Yeah, at any given time we’re open to things. It depends on what they are, are they beneficial to us for the long term?’
He noted that WWE chairman Vince McMahon himself would be ‘open to anything’ but again, only in the right circumstances.
He said: ‘”Open for business,” I think you hear Vince say that a lot. I’ve been around him long enough to know that if it’s the right thing and it’s meaningful to business, he’s open to anything.’
AEW Dynamite airs Wednesday nights at 1am on Fite TV.
