When the Big Bang Theory first premiered on CBS in 2007, it became a huge hit and gained a heap of loyal fans across the world. It followed the lives of Sheldon Cooper (played by Jim Parsons) and his intelligent friends, but, Penny Hofstadter (Kaley Cuoco) was one member of the group who stood out as the only woman and the only one who wasn’t a college graduate. However, it’s been revealed that she too could’ve been an engineer.

According to screenrants.com Penny could’ve attended college and become a successful engineer, just like her friend Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg).

They reported: “In the series’ second episode, The Big Bran Hypothesis, Penny reveals that she rebuilt a tractor engine by herself when she was twelve.”

Throughout the series, she professed her recognition and respect for his role as an aerospace engineer by saying that “builds cool stuff that goes outer space.”

Despite driving a car that had multiple problems she previously expressed her interest in vehicles and screenrant.com stated: “Had she attended college, perhaps she could’ve been an engineer, but that is one big what if.”

Instead, Penny had dreams of becoming an actress, but in order to fund her life, she was a waitress at the Pasadena Cheesecake Factory.

Despite having a few minor acting roles under her belt, she was not in a great place financially and quit her job in season seven, telling husband Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) that she wanted to focus on her dreams.

She had his full support and relied on friends across the hall who could afford additional luxuries such as wi-fi, takeaway and movie tickets.

Despite his complaints about Penny never having money, Sheldon was generous and continued to loan her cash.

In season eight, she decided to give up on her acting career and take a job as a salesperson at Zangen, Bernadette Wolowitz’s (Melissa Rauch) pharmaceutical company.

Eventually, Penny was promoted to head of sales and even had the opportunity to tour Bill Gates around the company.

As the head of a department, she was in charge of a team and would receive a hefty bonus whenever they did well.

Despite initially wanting a role in PR for the company, she decided to stick to sales as the pay was better.

Unlike her friends, Penny didn’t have major success in working the job of her dreams.

Her husband Leonard had a PhD and was an Experimental Physicist at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

Across the hall from them lived Sheldon who was a child genius and started attending college at 11. Before receiving his PhD at 16 years old, with tons of other degrees to his name, he eventually became a Theoretical Physicist at Caltech.

Their other friend Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) also had a PhD and worked as an astrophysicist.

With her questionable career path being a recurring joke throughout the series she was able to prove her friends wrong.

Although she started off as a destitute waitress and a struggling actress, towards the end of the series Penny had climbed the corporate ladder and was making almost the same amount of money as her friends.

All episodes of the Big Bang Theory is available to stream on CBS.
