Black Summer on Netflix: Is Black Summer a prequel to Z Nation?

Black Summer’s release on Netflix in April 2019 sent Z Nation fans’ excitement levels through the roof. The Netflix Original series is created by Karl Schaefer, the same man behind Syfy’s much-loved Z Nation and fans quickly made the link that both shows were set in the same universe. But is Black Summer a direct prequel to Z Nation and could a series crossover be on the cards?

Is Black Summer a prequel to Z Nation?

Black Summer is regarded by many as being a prequel series Z Nation due to the fact they’re both set in the same universe.

The Netflix series doesn’t feature of pay reference to any of the characters or events to take place in Z Nation, however, and vice versa.

Z Nation and Black Summer creator Schaefer described the link best during a panel at Comic-Con in San Diego.

Schaefer told fans ahead of Black Summer’s release: “Black Summer is before the apocalypse got weird and was just scary.”

Z Nation begins approximately four years into the apocalypse while Black Summer is set just as the outbreak has happened.

This led co-executive producer Jodi Linstock to tell Syfy: “Really, the only similarity between Z Nation and Black Summer is that the Black Summer is the first summer that Z Nation took place in,”

“This is the first outbreak, this is when all the s***’s hitting the fan. It’s not tongue-in-cheek at all.

“It is as realistic as any television I’ve ever seen.”

The link between the two series is so tenuous, in fact, that Black Summer lead actress Jaime King revealed she didn’t even see Black Summer as a prequel.

King told ScreenRant: “It’s interesting because people started tying [Black Summer] to Z Nation and I’m like this has nothing to do with that.

“It’s not a link to Z Nation. I had never actually seen Z Nation or heard about Z Nation, but I have friends who absolutely love that show, and then people started putting it out there that it was like a prequel of Z-Nation, which it’s not.

“So there was a moment when it was kind of confusing because I was like, wait, how is this related? And really there is no relationship, but the relationship is it came from the people that were involved with Z Nation, but that’s where I think it all the sudden became, oh this must be a straight up zombie genre show, and it’s so much deeper than that.

“If you want to see the meaning and the drama and the truth, it’s there.

“And if you’re in and down and love something that is genre-bending and terrifying because it’s so honest, it’s also there. It’s got everything. And it was really exciting to blend all of these genres together. That tells a true great story.”

For horror fans predicting a Black Summer/Z Nation crossover, they may be disappointed.

Netflix is yet to announce any plans to incorporate Z Nation characters into Black Summer.

And with Z Nation being cancelled on Syfy last year, there’s zero chance of Black Summer’s alumni appearing on the network.

Z Nation actor DJ Qualls, who played Citizen Z/Simon, also appeared to dampen hopes of a crossover while also speaking at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Qualls suggested he and his co-stars feel “too old” after five seasons of Z Nation to turn back time and appear in the prequel.

Of course, with nothing set in stone yet, there’s no saying a crossover will never happen.

Before a Z Nation/Black Summer crossover can even be theorised, however, season two of the Netflix Original series needs to be confirmed.

Unfortunately, there’s no word from Netflix that another season of Black Summer will be given the green light (at the time this article is written).

Black Summer fans needn’t worry too much as the streaming giant can take up to a few months before renewing its series.

Renewals tend to be based on how well Original series have fared with subscribers.

As Netflix rarely releases its viewing figure for its content, it’s nigh on impossible to know exactly how well Black Summer did in the ratings.

Should season two be confirmed, it won’t appear on the likes of Hulu, Amazon Prime, or Sky as it’s a Netflix Original series.

Black Summer is available to stream on Netflix now.
