Horror fans everywhere binged Black Summer as soon as the series dropped on Netflix earlier this year. Racking up plaudits from the likes of Stephen King and a worldwide fanbase, Black Summer fans are now just waiting for the series renewal to be confirmed by Netflix. As they await official confirmation, Express.co.uk exclusively spoke with one of the show’s biggest stars Sal Velez Jr and he hinted another series could be on the horizon and that his character William may make a shock return.
Will Black Summer season 2 be confirmed?
Black Summer season two still hasn’t received the green light by Netflix.
Horror fans needn’t fear, however, as Velez Jr spoke about his character William’s death and the future of the Netflix series.
The actor told Express.co.uk: “I felt like even when I read it (William’s death) I felt like the way I felt when I saw Jon Snow die.
“I almost felt like this can’t be possible, this can’t be happening right now. I knew, in the beginning, he was going to have a tragic death that would come to him, but I told the directors and I told everybody not to let me know until the very end.
“We wrote a lot of stuff as we went along – I didn’t really want to know, even though I knew, I didn’t really want to know the details of it,
“You want to find out just as the audience finds out and you want to have a real reaction to it.”
WHERE IS BLACK SUMMER FILMED?
The Netflix star went on to drop a major hint regarding Black Summer season two’s status.
Velez Jr continued: “I can say this, just like Jon Snow had his revival and comeback, I think that since they really don’t show the death of William…
“I’m going to leave it to the audience’s imagination to see what happens in the next season.
“This, Black Summer, was a prequel to the Z Nation series, which was the one summer that everybody went zombie and the infection all came out and this as years much sooner than when Z Nation took off,
“So these producers and these writers they’re very much into writing prequels and writing a lateral kind of storyline so I wouldn’t be surprised.
“I know a lot of people would want to see William but I don’t write or create it and I’m not even allowed to say whether I did [die] or not.
“I think it’d be exciting for a lot of the fans and the audience, they love that storyline. I don’t want to know what happens in that world, I just wanna be surprised by it.”
HOW TO WATCH BLACK SUMMER ONLINE
Should Velez Jr’s character return, it would undoubtedly be one of the most talked-about moments in Black Summer.
Rose (played by Jaime King) seemingly shot William after he injured his leg during an escape from the dead in the season one finale.
Speaking about the characters who did make it to the end of Black Summer alive, Velez Jr revealed what he thinks could be inshore for them.
He said: “In that world because it’s so apocalyptic, the first thing I’d wish for them to have is peace.
“They’re running to survive and they’re running to try and find their families and reconnect with the people they love.
“I think there’s a peace out there and it might be a kind of a worldly thought that everyone in those kinds of circumstances can find some peace and some solace to their lives, even if they know their outcome is going to be doom.
“Even if they know that something tragic is going to happen to them, if they have at least one peaceful moment of their whole entity, I think that’d be a well-deserved moment for them.”
WHO IS IN THE CAST OF BLACK SUMMER?
Velez Jr’s performance in Black Summer led to Netflix putting the actor forward for consideration for an Emmy Award.
The Black Summer star admitted the news came as a “surprise” but felt “honoured” by Netflix’s backing.
Velez Jr said: “For me, this is the first time a network has got behind me like that and submitted me like that.
“So I was very surprised, I thought it was one of my producers playing a joke on me!
“It felt like that particular role might be something that would catch a lot of people’s eye but I was definitely still honoured and humbled to just find out that Netflix submitted me and campaigned for me. It’s a really good feeling.”
Black Summer is available to stream on Netflix now.
