TV wildlife presenter Chris Packham has torn a strip off idiots’ who install artificial grass – saying it creates a "desolate plastic wasteland".
The Springwatch host said anyone who dug up a real garden to lay the mock turf wanted to live in `Barbies’ Legoland’.
He tweeted an advert featuring before and after photos showing how a landscaper had replaced a real lawn with fake grass.
The ad claimed the garden had gone `from desolate wasteland to luscious lawn in a day’.
Packham, 60, tweeted: "Wrong – from luscious biodiversity to desolate plastic wasteland.
"But don’t worry , we don’t need wildlife do we?
"We haven’t found solace in respite in the nature in our gardens over the last year have we?
"No. So just rip it up and live in Barbies’ Legoland then. Idiots."
He then posted a link to an online petition calling on the Government to bring in a new law requiring anyone thinking of laying fake grass to obtain planning permission.

The petition – which last night had 8,547 signatures – said the bogus lawns `come with huge negatives’.
"Every day more British gardens are being ripped out for plastic grass," it stated.
"Our entire ecosystem from bees & hedgehogs to bats & birds is losing precious habitat all in the name of saving people 10-minutes mowing.
"There is a high carbon footprint at production and loss of carbon storage when a natural garden is replaced.
"Microplastics & plastic waste is a growing environmental concern.
"It’s bad for soils & soil life which impedes drainage, increasing flooding.Countless species rely on lawns for pollen/nectar.
"By destroying insect life we are damaging our ecology from the ground up.Such a destructive & rapidly spreading practice should require planning permission."
The Government must respond to all petitions that receive 10,000 signatures
