Corrie star bemoans 'loss of Hollywood career' after refusing Covid jab

Ex-Coronation Street star Matthew Marsden has said that he lost his career in Hollywood due to his decision to remain unvaccinated.

The actor, who played Chris Collins on the ITV soap between 1997 and 1998, went on to star in a number of films and TV series including Helen of Troy and Amazon’s Reacher.

The 49-year-old, however, says that his decision to remain unvaccinated has impacted his work, and even led to him losing out on a role.

‘I’ve worked a lot with soldiers, and it’s really difficult for me to say losing my career is a difficult decision to stand up for what is right when they’ll go, and they’ll die, and they’ll lose everything,’ he told Fox News.

‘To me, it wasn’t [a difficult decision] at all. I’d be very cowardly if I didn’t. This is all happening because we’re letting it happen.

The former Emmerdale actor, who now lives in the US, continued: ‘If more people stood up and said something, then this would all stop. We are this great country, which is the last best hope for the world.

‘This isn’t just about this country, it’s about the whole world. I know because I saw it. I know because I was there dreaming of coming here. I’m that guy.

‘I got offered a job… and they said there was still a requirement that you had to be vaccinated. I informed them that I was not vaccinated, and I submitted a religious exemption, and it was, of course, dismissed and that’s that.

‘I didn’t become a citizen of this country to have my First Amendment rights and my other rights [taken away]… for me to have to worry about having to lie about something like having a vaccine, I think it’s an invasion of privacy. I don’t think it’s right.’

Matthew’s acting break came in 1995 when he appeared in Emmerdale, starring as Daniel Weir, who was the lover of mainstay Kathy Glover. He joined Coronation Street in 1997, playing mechanic Chris Collins, who worked at the garage alongside Kevin Webster.

Chris had an affair with Sally, which inevitably led to conflict on the street when the truth was revealed.
