Coronation Street’s Beverley Callard has revealed she had ‘serious talks’ with Strictly Come Dancing before her hip injury.
The Liz McDonald star could have been switching the Rovers Return for the glitzy dance floor – but it seems her nightmare injury got in the way.
She admitted it’s her ‘dream’ to be on the show, explaining: ‘They’ve asked me a few times over the years [for I’m a Celebrity], and I’ve always thought no, absolutely not.
‘One of my dreams is to do Strictly, so please tell Oti [Mabuse] that, I’m a massive fan and love the show.’
The 63-year-old added to Steph McGovern on Steph’s Packed Lunch: ‘I wouldn’t win Strictly by any means, but I’d love to do it. I was in serious talks with them before my hip thing happened.’
Instead, EastEnders’ Maisie Smith (Tiffany Butcher) will be representing soapland, after she was announced for the show.
Beverley was left in agony earlier this year after a routine hip operation went wrong, resulting in her having to have a full hip replacement.
The star, whose last scenes as Liz aired in June, underwent a minor operation in March after being told she has a soft tissue tear in her right hip.
The actress was told that the surgery had went well, but in the following days, Beverley was in agony and feared she wouldn’t be able to walk again.
She told the Sunday Mirror: ‘I have been in the most excruciating pain you can imagine – like teeth grinding inside my hip. But worse than that was the mental torture of thinking, “Is this the end for me?”
‘A huge part of me thought I’d never be able to return to Coronation Street – that I wouldn’t even walk again.’
Beverley underwent a hip replacement in July and has been recovering and learning to walk again.
She said: ‘I’ve got nerve damage, muscle damage. a lot of muscle has wasted away because I couldn’t walk.
‘Now I’m learning how to walk on both legs again. At one point we thought we might have to have a stairlift installed in the house.’
While she had to step back from the soap without a planned exit, thankfully she’s confirmed she will be returning, with the star hinting it will be ‘very dramatic’.
We wouldn’t expect anything less.
