DI Richard Poole (played by Ben Miller) became an instant fan-favourite when he was introduced to BBC viewers in the very first season of Death in Paradise. Filmed in Guadeloupe and set in the fictional island of Saint Marie, the murder-mystery drama-comedy has continued to attract millions of viewers week after week – so much so, the BBC has renewed the series for an 11th run. Miller left the role back in 2014 when he was replaced by Kris Marshall and discussing his time on the show on Saturday’s Celebrity Catchphrase on ITV, he admitted things on set weren’t always ideal.

Miller joined Loose Women and Strictly Come Dancing star Judi Love and newsreader Lucrezia Millarini on Saturday’s episode of Celebrity Catchphrase on ITV.

As usual, host Stephen Mulhern took a moment before the quizzing began to get to know each famous face a little bit better.

And inevitably, it didn’t take long for the conversation with Miller to turn towards his time filming the BBC series.

“Listen, you’ve done so many different things,” Mulhern began to Miller. “You’ve done (the) Johnny English movies, Paddington films, recently Bridgerton which has been like a humungous hit that it is.

“But, would you say people know you best really for Death in Paradise?” the Catchphrase host asked.

“Yes,” Miller replied as Mulhern probed further: “So when you got the call, what was going through your mind?”

The DI Richard Poole star spotted the chance for a cheeky swipe as he said: “Oh, no.”

Laughs rippled through the ITV studio before he went on: “This looks like a disaster because I am terrible in the heat.”

Explaining further how he struggled to cope, Miller went on: “I’d only ever been to the Caribbean in the winter, which is when it’s perfect.

“You couldn’t have asked for a better place to go on holiday… in the winter,” he emphasised.

Continuing his rant, Miller said: “In the summer, it’s unbelievable!

“I mean I was wearing a wool suit in all my scenes so I just wilted like a lily.”

While he may have found the conditions “terrible”, Miller starred in two full seasons of the hit series.

And he even made a surprise return in season 10, despite his character being killed off in the season three premiere.

Appearing via a hallucination, Miller returned as DI Poole alongside fellow returnee DS Camille Bordey (Sara Martins).

Miller also couldn’t resist another cheeky joke at the show’s expense when he appeared in one of the show’s brainteasers.

Inevitably the answer was “Death in Paradise” and Miller was the one to buzz in and answer it correctly.

“There had to be a reason why I did that show,” the actor joked as he added more money to his prize fund.

Mulhern and the rest of the line-up shared a laugh before moving on with the rest of the show.

Death in Paradise seasons 1-10 are available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
