Coronation Street’s favourite corner shop owner is exiting the soap for an exciting adventure in the coming months to mark 20 years in the soap.
Dev Alahan actor Jimmi Harkishin is set to quit the cobbles to head off on the trip of a lifetime to mark the fact that he has manned the till in the shop since 1999. Show bosses have allowed him an extended break from his contract so that he can celebrate, and he has huge plans.
‘This is actually my 20th year at Corrie,’ Jimmi told messengernewspapers.co.uk. ‘My first appearance was on November 10, 1999, and I have loved every minute of it. I’ve been here that long that I am now an honorary Mancunian!
‘Corrie bosses have very kindly let me have time off for two months to celebrate my 20th year, which I am very grateful for, so I am going to visit China and Japan.’
His little shop has seen a lot of drama over the hears, most recently with a fake robbery when Chesney and Kirk faked that the takings had been stolen in order to use the cash for Sinead’s cancer treatment. Dev was also faced with a shovel-wielding Steve who thought Dev’s son had got his daughter pregnant.
There’s no word yet on Dev’s exit storyline for Jimmi to be able to have a break. He previously had an extended break in 2015 from February to June of that year.
Dev joined the soap in 1999 in a whirlwind of drama as an obsessive ex girlfriend followed him there, pretending to be pregnant with his baby and lying that she’d tried to commit suicide.
Speaking of his favourite Corrie moment, Jimmi revealed it was the affair with Deirdre.
‘Actually, today one of the writers reminded me of a story line she pitched about the Dev and Deirdre affair. That was really good fun to film with the late, great Anne Kirkbride. Wonderful memories,’ he said.
