Donald Trump took a hard stance against Black Lives Matter protesters pulling down statues of controversial political figures, branding their activities “a disgrace.” Former White House Communication Director Anthony Scaramucci told Good Morning Britain President Trump could exploit the ongoing protests to win over voters ahead of the election. Mr Scaramucci insisted the US President is now seeking a “narrative” to dictate his presidential campaign and the BLM demonstrations could “play in his hands” and help him win in November.

Mr Scaramucci said: “The strategy right now is that the President seems to be stepping on his message.

“If they continue to tear down statues in the United States and they continue to riot, that will play into the President’s hands.

“As he is searching for a campaign narrative right now, that narrative will be, ‘people are trying to take away your cultural heritage’.”

He continued: “He will pit that against each other in a big cultural war. I would never rule President Trump out, this is going to be a fight to the finish.”

BLM protests were reignited at the end of May following the death of 46-year-old Afro-American George Floyd while in police custody.

Demonstrations erupted worldwide and resulted in the forced removal of several controversial statues in both the US and the UK.

A statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davies was toppled in Richmond in mid-June and at least three statues of Christopher Columbus have been vandalised or removed since the start of June.

And on Monday new clashes between the police and protesters were reported in Washington DC over attempts to tear down a statue dedicated to former US President Andrew Jackson.
