Tuesday’s instalment of Emmerdale saw David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) and Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) plunge into menacing waters after falling from a collapsing rope bridge during a survival week. The pair tried their hardest to stay afloat together, but David was forced to watch on in horror when Victoria cascaded towards the edge of a waterfall. If Victoria drowns, will David leave Emmerdale if the guilt of losing her becomes unbearable?
Monday night’s Emmerdale saw a dangerous rope bridge above a canyon collapse in one of the most dramatic sequences ever to be filmed on the ITV soap.
Viewers watched on in dread as Manpreet Sharma (Rebecca Sarker) and Charles Anderson (Kevin Mathurin) plunged into the icy rapids after falling off the bridge.
On Tuesday, fans were left on the edge of their seats after David and Victoria were also left fighting for their lives.
The pair had to cling on to the collapsing rope bridge, which was suspended about 60ft in the air, to avoid falling into the rapids below.
A terrified Victoria cried out to David telling him she was struggling to hold on to the unstable rope bridge.
“I can’t hold on, it’s going to snap, I just know it,” she screamed.
David, who was also hanging onto the rope bridge for his life, replied: “Start climbing up. Reach up and grab hold of something and pull yourself up.”
However, Victoria was too scared to even attempt climbing the rope at first.
After David’s encouragement, Victoria managed to put her fear of heights to one side and started trying to climb up the unstable bridge.
David shouted: “Get yourself up there, come on, you can do it.”
But Victoria told David he needed her help, so she started climbing down the rope bridge towards him.
Just as she was about to grab his hand, the bridge snapped and the pair plummeted into the turbulent waters below.
A petrified Victoria and David tried their hardest to stay afloat together in the rapids but they soon became separated in the swell.
David had no choice but to watch on in dread as Victoria cascaded towards the edge of a large waterfall.
A powerless Victoria was unable to grab hold of anything to prevent her from being swept away by the current.
The dramatic episode ended when Victoria was dragged under the water, with the fast-moving water pulling her down a huge waterfall.
When discussing the intense scene, director Duncan Foster explained: “We played an emotional moment with the two characters clinging to this rock where they both know that she’s slipping away and just as David’s trying to grab hold of her he gets engulfed by water and she goes very rapidly (ignore the pun) over the waterfall.”
Will David blame himself if Victoria doesn’t make it out of the water alive?
Could the overwhelming guilt of losing her force him to exit the soap for good in order to move on with his life?
Emmerdale continues weekdays on ITV.
