Emmerdale’s Bernice discusses exit on This Morning amid theories she may return

Emmerdale actress Samantha Giles, who plays Bernice Blackstock, has addressed the theories that her character will return to the soap.

She appeared on This Morning on Friday and discussed Bernice's exit from the soap the night before, which appeared to have been left open as she departed in a taxi rather than being killed off.

The beautician had been preparing to marry the love of her life, Liam, played by Jonny McPherson.

But her daughter Dee Dee, played by Mia Gibson-Reed, received a call that changed everything – she found out that her father had been in a car accident and was in intensive care.

His condition was said to be serious, with Dee Dee keen to get back as soon as she could to be with him.

With it being Bernice's wedding day to Liam the following day, she was unsure what to do.

Bernice made the heartbreaking decision to leave with Dee Dee and be with her dad, saying her goodbyes and heading off in a taxi.

The fact that she didn't die leaves things open for Samantha to return to the soap, but she told This Morning hosts Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes that she wanted to explore other projects for now.

When quizzed on her exit, she said: "I just felt it was the right time, thinking about it for a couple of years.

"I got itchy feet, I want to do some other stuff, play something more gritty."

She added that she wouldn't have minded if Bernice had been killed off.

"I don’t think you can ask to leave and then say ‘don’t kill me off’", she said.

"But they wanted to leave it open."

When Ruth and Eamonn asked if she would return, Samantha replied: "Never say never, but for now the door is closed."

Samantha has left and returned to Emmerdale several times.

She appeared in the soap from 1998-2002, returned briefly in 2004, and then returned again in 2012.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8pm.
