Jake Gyllenhaal’s ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ Trailer Depicts Deaths by Art

AceShowbizJake Gyllenhaal reunites with “Nightcrawler” writer and director Dan Gilroy for a new movie titled “Velvet Buzzsaw“. The first trailer for the film has been released online, showing how art can turn literally dangerous.

Gyllenhaal plays Morf Vandewalt, a local art gallery owner who searches for unique masterpiece. When paintings found on a crime scene catch his attention, he puts them on display at his gallery. The paintings soon attract art collectors and have “people ready to kill” to own them.

But it’s not until a series of mysterious deaths that they realize the paintings are plagued by some sort of deadly curse. When Vandewalt wants to get rid of them, it’s all too late and he himself is now haunted by the supernatural force.

The movie is set in the shallow, vapid world of L.A.’s contemporary art scene, where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce. The film revolves around a series of paintings found in a dead hermit’s apartment. The paintings, however, turn out to be cursed with the supernatural ability to come to life and soon those who buy them begin to be consumed by the deranged entity possessing the morbid pictures.

Dan Gilroy once again pulls double duty as a writer and director for “Velvet Buzzsaw”. Rene Russo stars as Rhodora Haze, Vandewalt’s assistant who runs his art gallery. Toni Collette, John Malkovich, Billy Magnussen, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge, Natalia Dyer and Daveed Diggs are also among the cast ensemble. Malkovitch’s character Piers is described as the most famous contemporary artist whose work is on the decline ever since he stopped drinking.

“Velvet Buzzsaw” will be released on Netflix and select theaters in the U.S. on February 1.
